What are the thoughts on this for the average WoW player?
I personally would like the option for a character name to be iABC for example formatting.
I may very well be the minority side of this suggestion. Just curious to get others opinions. Would it hurt having the ability to not have the first character upper case and then remaining characters be lower case or would it be fine?
I dunno. Thing is, it would likely wind up causing new drama in one of two ways…
One. Large amounts of people complaining that they don’t need to see LegoLas, LEGOlas, LegoLAS, LeGoLaS, and LeGOlas all in the same party, and dammit, Blizz, make it one name period and don’t allow the case sensitivity dodge, and
Two. Large amounts of people complaining about a lack of case sensitivity, because the playerbase should be allowed to use LegoLas, LEGOlas, LegoLAS, LeGoLaS, and LeGOlas all as separate names and Blizzard is “just killing fun”.
Either way, it would be a Lose-lose situation for Blizzard, so I doubt they’ll address that.
Oh sorry to clarify I did not mean to imply that allowing case sensitivity that meant the name in all different formats would be an available option. If a name is taken in a certain spelling, it should certainly be unavailable for claim on a new character creation.
I’m simply suggesting for example my name Lion, what if I wanted it to be lion instead with no capital L. I feel like that shouldn’t be so crazy.
No. It’s your name. It’s a proper noun. Allowing people to name themselves things that aren’t names (ie: the only reason to want lowercase first letters) would go against their naming policy.
Would create problems on RP servers where there are more specific naming rules, otherwise I don’t see the difference between Cowpatty, CowPatty and cOWpAtty (or some other Tauren meme name)- other than one is just more annoying to type.
I do think the systems as whole (mail/chat) doesn’t make a distinction between capitalized letters though - so for communication purposes it could be nightmare.
Of course I respect your opinion, and to each their own on how they prefer to be addressed. Although, I would disagree to assuming intent on selecting a name with a lower case first character comes from a place of wanting to be a thing. I would say at least from my perspective having all lower case characters in a character name comes across more visually appealing. That’s just my personal aesthetic.
Be that as it may be currently against the name policy, doesn’t mean things are not subject to change. Clearly Blizzard doesn’t allow this for the present time, but the discussion was founded to discuss the opinions of people participating in this forum.
Right, I don’t know or want to claim to know how their systems work. That being said I would be surprised if their communications designs on the back end are at all case sensitivity related restricted. So to whisper someone you may be able to just type their full name lower case, and even acknowledging someone of course you don’t have to address them in their specific chosen case sensitivity. For me the ability to use a name such as you have an example CowPatty would be for my own personal visual preference. I mean to draw a comparison, Transmog allows for the player to appear as something they prefer, and not what they are. Why not allow a player to have a name in the case sensitivity formatting they prefer when in a real way it would hurt nobody.
