My current system is the AMD Ryzen 5 5600x, Gigabyte RTX 3070, 16 GB ram.
My goal is to switch to a Mini-ITX build with whatever the newest intel is, with either i5 or i7 (this is only for gaming and web browsing, so I thought i7 might be an overkill).
Can anyone help me with ideas? I really like the ASUS ROG Strix of motherboards. I have to make sure my 3070 fits though.
I was thinking the NR200P Max case from coolermaster so I don’t have to buy a new PSU/Cooler and it’s a very small form factor, but I wasnt sure if it can handle the new INTEL motherboards. I’m kinda bad at figuring all this out.
Also before any questions…there is nothing wrong with my AMD Ryzen 5, I love it. I’m going to give my old system to my son though and I really want to switch to INTEL because I bought stock in it, lol.
I mean you kind of answer many of your own questions
you are going with a core 3 or core 5 meteor lake CPU, you may want to double check cooling options and specs for the case
the case is the NR200P which will fit triple slot GPUs up to 336mm. I don’t know which Gigabyte rtx3070 you have but I believe they are all dual slot and the triple fans only reach 285mm.
the case only fits ITX mobos but it’s been a while (since I recall) of Asus releasing a ROG itx mobo. Also since meteor lake is expected to use new sockets the new mobos have yet to be released.
maybe i’ll just get the current intel instead of the new ones. I think they still beat my current CPU
I found this on Amazon for 218 bucks:
ASUS ROG Strix B760-I Gaming WiFi Intel® B760(13th and 12th Gen)LGA 1700 mini-ITX motherboard,8 + 1 power stages,DDR5 up to 7600 MT/s, PCIe 5.0,2xM.2 slots,WiFi 6E,USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C,Aura Sync RG
This can handle the 13th gen Intel. Good starting point?

I’m running this for my ITX rig.
Core i5-12600K
EK AIO 240 basic
Gigabyte Z690i Aorus Ultra Plus DDR4
G.Skill TridentZ 32GB DDR4-3200
Asus TUF RX 6800 16GB
WD Black SN850 1TB
Kingston KC3000 1TB
WD Black 1TB 2.5"
Cooler Master V 850W SFX
Lian Li A4-H2O
About the size of PS5.
looks like the mobo supports most of the 13th gen desktop series including the “K” chips with no need to update the BIOS
are you carrying over DDR4 ram from your previous build? If not may as well look into DDR5 since cost is in the same ballpark even if you go with another mobo

Yeah, DDR4 from previous rig. Sadly no DDR5 version for the board on sale. There is Asus ROG Strix Z690-I and MSI Z790i Edge Wifi though. Pricing is ridiculous. I bought this gigabyte board for around $200.

I switched cases to the Lian Li Q58. Looks amazing. I dont need a 850 PSU anyways and that case I had before didn’t have a bracket for the LG1700 slot

I feel old. Is ATX still the normal form factor for PCs?
yes. atx is normal. there is macro atx which is not as tall, and mini itx which is baby size
yes, BTX never really caught on.
No. Dont waste of money.
You are already on AM4 Get the 5800x3d and wait for Ryzen 8000 series or intels 15th gen since they are skipping 14th. The 5800x3D is the only upgrade you need. It will be a massive upgrade for you because World of Warcraft drinks up CPU cash like water in the desert.
Since World of Warcraft is such a CPU driven game the CPU is often bottle neck and you will notice no different between the 5800x3d and 13700k in wow. If anything your performance may be slightly better due to the CPU cache. Especially and heavily instanced areas like raids and battlegrounds
so I know its not a huge upgrade. Im not doing it 100% for that, its also because I want to skip to INTEL and also give my current system to my step son.
I get that. Im saying use the 5800x3d for now wait for Arrow Lake was my point. It will be a meaningful jump over 13th gen and will probably be more power efficient. Save for the platform upgrade in the meantime
Its hands down the smartest thing to do
if you look at Hardware Numb3rs WoW benchmarks with the 58003DX and Intel 12600k (using a RTX 3090 @ 1080p), he has the the 58003DX about 15% faster at highs and 7% at lows using stock settings (although he got the 12600k closer in performance with e-cores off). With a RTX 3070 those numbers would be even closer with one another. A 13th gen like the 13600k would offer a little better performance with its faster cores and larger cache but once again you would need flagship GPU and lower resolution like 1080p to truly see those differences.
I fully agree with everything you said Lily. I also think since the OP is determined to be on Intel they should wait for Arrow Lake.
It would hands down be this smartest thing to do. They are already on am4 and should just drop in the 5800x3D since it’s an inexpensive drop-in replacement. Then wait for Arrow Lake
the OP is giving one system to his son so maybe he wants both up and running ASAP to play together, I’m not really sure on the exact timeline
putting the 58003DX in and calling it a day is a great idea (microcenter is actually getting some 56003DX models soon)
building with a 12600k or better is a great idea
building with a 13600k or better is a great idea
building with raptor or arrow lake is a great idea
as long as you get the parts you want for a good price you are fine because all the CPUs we mentioned above are killer game CPUs. CPUs are so over powered now for gaming. If you own one of the above (or any that offer performance beyond that), getting high FPS in gaming is not a CPU issue for you. We have to use flagship GPUs and 1080p resolution so people can argue over the semantics of 150fps vs 170fps or better in gaming but in reality the person is gaming at 1440p or 4k in that setup and is GPU limited anyways.
At best we can offer the OP options and let them decided what’s best for them

I love the idea of arrow lake but you guessed it that time is somewhat of a factor. I’m not in a huge rush but isn’t arrow lake not for another year?
All I have bought so far is 32 gig ddr5 ram and that case I mentioned. I don’t play that many games. (Wow/lol/Diablo) so I don’t think waiting for arrow lake is worth it unless the thermals are just absolutely amazing and it sips power. I’m not against ideas though! I’d like this done in a few months.
Oh also I play on a 2k monitor
I just want to point out that the 5800X3D is already faster than the 13900k in WoW, even according to Intel’s very own marketing slides. The fact that you can simply drop this into your existing motherboard makes it a no-brainer.
