@OP, *smiles* You asked an honest question, and my answer is I have YET to ever have an encounter where I outed myself as a guy in any guild I ever been in.
Being on Wymrest Accord and Farstriders I have yet to experience any negative reactions and in fact it didn't matter to my guild mates as it were.
They love it when I log in knowing I can play just as well either with male/female characters and do my part in raiding Mythics and keys. GO FOR IT!
There is no stigma. If anything guys playing female toons is the majority. Do whatever you want

No, there's not.
Even if you ERP'd I wouldn't care, as long as you aren't harrassing people from my guild or doing it in plain guild chat.
I dont know why this would be a problem. I dont have to justify myself to anyone but if you wanna know, I'm playing a female orc shaman because my previous main was a male orc warrior and it seems redundant to have 2 male orcs. Also, I was tired of the hunch and sets look better in female orcs. That's also the reason that I dont play as Tauren, Undead, Troll or Goblin.
I assume that every player is male until proven otherwise to be honest.
In general, the attitude of "F them all, I'll do what I want" is very useful in many regards in many aspects of life itself.

Your old guild must have been full of scrubs.
They didn't know one of the most fundamental rules on the internet?
"Everyone is a guy".
Even if they say they AREN'T!
They are.

i have never had a problem because this isn't 1995 and everyone knows off the bat if you see a female character its 99% of the time a dude.
Problem doesn't exist for people who don't RP.
Normies don't care...

about a third of my toons are female and nobody I've ever played with has any problem with it. This isn't a dating/sexual role-playing game so it really doesn't matter to anybody what sex I'm playing and even if it did their opinion doesn't matter to me. The only thing I try to avoid when playing a female toon is using vocal headsets, it's hard to play with a female gnome when they sound like a 40 year old male cabbie from Brooklyn
Think about all the games where the main character is a girl that guys can play. And all the games that I as a girl, play a male character.
Just because in WoW you have a choice to pick your gender, doesn’t mean you have to play the one that you are irl.
It’s YOUR sub, YOUR time, and your fun! Do what you please.

Probably a quarter of my toons are female. Everyone always assumes Im a guy anyway. Although I do feel treated better when im one my female toons for whatever reason.
Actually, there’s NO “stigma” behind it. There’s just a handful of people on the forums who have never met a woman who think it’s icky.
I have never had a situation like you did OP. I have had a few people get upset after they try and in game flirt with me and they find out I am a guy they rage. People just trying to flirt with me and start up conversations is much much higher on my blood elf here, especially if I am just kinda sitting around Orgrimmar, probably the biggest hot spot.
It can honestly get in the way of just having a conversation with people in the game, it is hard to know at this point if that stranger talking to you is just trying to be friendly or if they are trying to lead into getting to know you on a more personal level.

I have played on both male and female characters since I started in late 2005, mainly for the variety and also to check out how different combinations suited my fancy in-game. I've never liked the aesthetics of the male character animations especially in the Tauren, Draenei, and Pandaren models (so much so I paid real life money to do gender reassignment on two of my main characters:
One Orc (my first character in the Horde and original main)
https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/character/eldrethalas/Alvisdagda
and one Undead
https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/character/eldrethalas/Beuler).
I've never run into any issues with anyone getting bothered by whether my real persona matched my avatar. Back when I played in guilds I never said which was which but was always perfectly OK with saying when asked. It's no big deal for me that the pixels on the screen don't match what I look like in reality (to be honest, if I wanted to stay totally real, I would have to only play Pandaren males because the females only match from the back. lol)
As far as I'm concerned, if someone is taken aback by a player having a character of a different gender than they are in real life, they need to check out the genre of the game. mmoRPG. If you keep yourself in-game as close as possible to who you are irl, you've missed 1/2 of the genre as it was intended. The problem therefore is with them and none of my concern. I wish them better days.
Happy trails cowboys (and/or cowgirls). :)

Got an alt who's a female character, I tend to do my own thing if I RP on her.
I've had about two instances of people coming onto me in-game in my 15 years of WoW. Both times once I coyly dropped that I'm a guy (usually in a jovial way) they sort of got shocked and blinked and moved on. Every other time I played? Not a problem. I'm in the game world. I see other people, but it's just their characters. In a game world. I don't care who's behind the keyboard as long as they're friendly.
It's just a game, if someone tries to take it that far it's on them, not on you.
Welcome to Moon Guard by the way, you can check our server forums for an event list to see if you're interested in any! :)

Recently I decided to boost this character so I could join my friends in MG for a bit of RP. There is a lot of stigma surrounding guys who play as female characters and I just so happen to be a guy irl who playing a female character alliance side on moon guard for RP purposes.
Everyone knows this; I'm not sure if a real life female would select a top like that (thank you, though.)
Also, you spelled "ERP purposes" incorrectly.
The only problem you will face is gear and dps check. Sometimes you got no choice to play a female toon if their kit is legit. Vice versa m8.
Thought it was Goblin in Real Life?
