Their explicitly stated intent is to remove the grind behind sockets/conduits. More players than they intended were viewing them as mandatory during progression, and this gives a solution to reduce the grind and still give you access to sockets.
The intent behind this change is for your character to be able to get something from the vault when your character has enough gear that your vault is just fishing for specific items. If it’s not a 278 IQD to replace a 272 IQD, it’s probably better to take a socket. Over a non-tier hat, something in the legendary slot, or a ring with bad stats.
Please add soul cinders a possible reward, we have the other 2 but not this one. Please I beg of you!

While this is a nice solution to making a vault with no upgrades somewhat still useful and keeping player retention as the key focus once players are fully geared and cycling them through m+ on the treadmill.
Another Farmable source should be introduced through Cyphers or Cosmic Flux as this would allow for player choice in the matter as some would much rather pickup offspec / off content loot in their box (pvp pieces for example for pve main characters) as opposed to needing to sacrifice the vault for player power in the raid, albeit minor endgame players will feel forced to take sockets over other spec or content choices.
Overall I love this change! This gives something for players who either don’t have a good vault choice or just don’t need anything out of the vault. Time to stock up on that gold 
Some of the possible rewards like Renown Catchup seems a little weak to me as it probably is never worth it to pick over other options (and renown is kind of easy to get up if you do Daily/Weekly content or any other activity). For new and returning players I probably would never pick the renown option either as it just seems a lot weaker compared to whatever gear you would get from the vault for your character progression.
Other than that though love this for the vault and hope whatever similar system we have going into 10.0 will have a similar alternative currency added.
Excelsior. Now I’ll be more glad tomorrow to receive zero tier on my main for the 2nd week of clearing 7/8 raid bosses, and 8 mythic + dungeons for 2 weeks, being 0/4 on tier for week 3. I may just get my 2 set a few weeks after I get aotc. Hoping to get the 4 set by 10.1 or 10.2

These are amazing changes. I am extremely impressed with this. This is the kind of stuff we really need in WoW. The vault has been a horror show for me for the entire expansion, but this is the exact kind of things I would hope it would do.
Instead of spending all this time developing something like this, add in bad luck protection, or code it so that you get items you need vs just having it so RNG based. At the beginning of a patch, no one should have to choose tokens.
If they do, then there is an issue with your system.

Good thing I don’t have to complain about my room being messy because i’m blind.
This is the same equivalent. I don’t want to surrender any possible sidegrades or alternate spec gear because this is the only way to get gems, it’s fool’s gold is what it is.
2 Day Grind Socket > 1 Week Grind Socket.
This change sucks, and now we’re stuck with it wonderful.

Don’t like the additional bribery to fill up your entire vault but they are nice options.
If you only enjoy PvP/Raid/M+ you would need 3 weeks worth of tokens for one socket item VS two easier sources in 9.1.
Please just give the rewards out when the content is completed. It would be far more enjoyable to receive the reward right then instead of deferring it later to the great vault after all of the excitement has gone away.

I guess the difference in opinions is that I don’t think this is a grind anymore. I’m just doing the content that I would be doing anyways.

Then don’t. They simply added an option for when you don’t get good roles from the vault. You can still RNG into sockets.
Then just don’t buy the sockets. I’d rather have the option to do something and not do so, than to not have the option to do something I want.

Well, now that you can get them from the Vault, there’s zero reason to not also put them on The Enlightened for those of us that don’t mind grinding.
Being limited to one per week, at the cost of not taking a piece of gear (and provided you’ve unlocked at least three slots) is a terrible downgrade from the last two seasons.

Can we get a conduit upgrade system for pvpers? Why not have a conduit upgrade path with this.
