Retort: They should let us use vanilla graphics in retail wow
BattleNet messaging/social integration is something they said that they are intentionally keeping. While not classic, I don’t think anyone was going to win asking them to tear out integration with their primary social platform.
But most of us here account for maybe 5% of the WoW Classic community. We just have loud voices. Most players will want upgraded graphics/characters guaranteed. Especially if we want to attract more people to come play the game so it doesn’t die. This is why a toggle option pleases everyone!
We’ve got a 1600+ long thread ultimately locked by a blue that proves it wouldn’t “please everyone”. So there goes that idea.
The most viewed post on this forum is at 41k views. Maybe 5% of the WoW Classic community has visited the forums but far less than that is active on these forums.
How wouldn’t it? Those who want true vanilla graphics can only see that. Those who want upgraded will only see the newer models… What exactly did the Blue say?
No matter what version they chose to use, there would be loud opposition against it. You can’t please everyone.
Essentially that there was so much arguing in the thread (because it literally did not please everyone, at all, and the idea very much upset a lot of people – like myself) so it was being locked for being (my words) a dumpster fire.
I don’t want someone dictating what my character looks like to them suited to their preference, and I don’t want them setting precedence of intentionally implementing non-classic things. Even my own preference is irrelevant, because Blizzard has literally published an article that we’re getting 1.12 Classic, and so that’s what everyone should expect. Not a slew of toggles that sets it up for “Classic WoW - Burger King Edition: Have it your way!”
The community on the Classic WoW Reddit is much more supportive of optional graphical improvements. It’s probably safe to say if we eventually get a true Remastered Classic+, graphics would probably be at the top of the list for improvement.

Got it. I’m in for the toggle only because I fear that older graphics will deter some people from playing. I really don’t want Classic to die or for devs to not pay a lot of attention because they’re not getting enough subs. And yes, a lot of people care about graphics.
If people don’t play because of graphics, I’m not sure I care for them anyway.
And I am completely on board with a separate project/servers (Classic+ seems to be the running term for it on the forums) with all sorts of improvements and options and whatever else hybrid of things folks want. Literally, all for it and would vote for it to exist if a survey was sent out. Wouldn’t play on it, but it makes sense to fill a target market.
But simply put, Classic WoW as releasing in August 2019 is not billed as remastered/Classic+, and should remain (as stated by Blizzard) as authentically classic as possible.
Welcome to 2019
So, for all you Johnny-come-lately’s pushing narratives like this, you’re patently wrong. If you took the trouble to do some minimum effort watching and reading on the history of how this project got here before mouthing off on the forums, you’d know that.
The 230k+ people who signed the petition that Mark Kern took to Blizzard CEO (at the time) Mike Morhaime and got Classic considered (the private server community, streamers, and ordinary players who hate the way Retail has gone) did it wanting the experience that PServers provided i.e. #nochanges Vanilla.
Google and read. Go to YouTube and do a search and watch. Then you will understand what you’re speaking into. It’s okay you want something else, but THIS is what Classic is, and it rests on the efforts of a lot of people for whom you do not speak.
P.S. Also, less people would jump on the anti-streamer bandwagon if they understood that without their support and 14 million+ combined audience, the petition wouldn’t have carried nearly as much weight.
Except that’s not true at all, as plenty of good games still being made don’t have AAA graphics.
You want to care for them because if people don’t want to start playing cuz of graphics, subs will go down. And Classic could be in danger.
I don’t care about graphics. I just want it to please the majority because I DO NOT want Classic to die.
Yes and I understand that, like I said, our voices are loud. But we would merely be a small percentage of the whole picture once Classic launches. It’s the new thing, everyone will want to try it even if they haven’t experienced vanilla. Some might be put off by the older graphics, thus losing subs. And that’s what I don’t want or anyone wants, because we want Classic to be thriving and alive. That’s why I truly believe a toggle would be the best for both worlds
On the graphics issue, I’ve played it and it’s gorgeous AND Classic. They’ve done a beautiful job. I personally would like the option for a lot of the modern graphical enhancements too (I love graphics and always push systems as far as they will go), but I also understand every tiny change has a ripple effect, a lot of it unforeseeable.
Regardless of the snake oil salesmanship of those agitating for their own little preferences being slipped into the game, any change will inevitably mean more change (and almost certainly more bugs which have to be solved, creating even more change), and suddenly it’s not Vanilla anymore.
So not just out of respect for the people who got us here, but also because I understand how these things work, I’m staunchly #nochanges despite my personal preferences.
We’re not in desperate need of subs. Blizzard doesn’t need a huge amount of return for the small investment hosting the servers will require. And frankly, if it comes between the server and randoms, I’ll take the server.
I don’t think that it is a “small investment”. As a business owner myself, you are motivated for certain reasons. To do this to please peoples emotions is a lie if you believe that. This is essentially a complete revival of their collapsing player base. The game has been going downhill every expansion. The resurrection of Vanilla can be exactly what this company needs for many reasons. This is a pretty big deal. You can see potentially hundreds of thousands of new game purchases + subs that are non-existent today. James Bond Goldeneye on N64 was legendary, we all played it and it was the best… but how many of you still play it? no one really, because it’s not in the marketplace today on what we use to game… but if it was released on new consoles it would blow up in sales. A major key to that would be to throw an HD remaster over it but keep the game the exact same… Just like they have done with Age of Empires II, Rise of Nations, etc. The HD touch over the original game mechanics being untouched is what the masses want.
