Graphics not character models

Many people focus on the character models but I want to discuss the option for bringing all the options in the graphic settings we have now into classic at least. At the end of the day Blizzard, if you don’t want to update any textures into high-res can you consider Ray Tracing so our graphics cards can enhance the quality?

Graphics in every regard imaginable should remain exactly as it was in Vanilla. Period.

That’s all I have to say on the topic.

Both the character models and graphics from classic are horrible, yes. But it’s intended as a ‘museum piece’ type of release, so if they want to stick to that definition it’d have to look as it did back then.

Unfortunataly for you, there’s already a number of modern graphical options including the modern water textures.

I’m well aware of what already exists, I feel it shouldn’t. But I’m glad that they’re not adding any more to it. Also, are you just trying to call me out where you see me since you lost the last one?

The graphics aren’t horrible though, they’ve aged quite well.

They’re okay in some places. The actual worlds look okay, and some models are okay, like the silithids, raptors, gnomes, night elves and female humans and dwarves. When they’re bad though, like tauren, trolls, male humans, male dwarves, the zombie models from EPL/Stratholme, and old worgen and goblins for instance, they’re really ugly. I usually make male characters but if I ever made a dwarf for instance, I’d have to make a female ones because male dwarves are that bad.

I just want a toggle, so everyone is happy. The “upgraded” graphics will seek the attention of newcomers, while the old graphics attracts the “#nochange” group.

I don’t think its going against the “museum piece release” idea if blizzard allows users to check mark extra shaders, filtering, etc? I’d like to run on all the ultra settings I have on current retail, and run all those same settings on ultra in Classic. Even if they still use the same textures and models all around, wouldn’t that just unlock players using their personal GPU capabilities?

As was pointed out by Galdor, there are some modern graphical features that were unintentionally present due to Blizzard using the Legion client as the basis for Classic WoW versus the genuine 1.12 Vanilla Client.

It’s an important distinction that #catertomypreference folks like Galdor like to leave out. As literally described by Blizzard in their official published article called “Restoring History: Creating WoW Classic Panel Recap”, they chose the Legion client as it would be an undue technical burden to start with such an old client. For example, a loss of all of the OS/DirectX/graphics compatibility and performance (not textures and models) improvements made over the years, anti-hack improvements/changes, and more.

So while none of us who want authentic classic are excited about the Legion client being used, Blizzard has at least published their explanation for it and that gaining graphical engine updates was not the intention, but a mere side-effect.

These are things like the ground clutter engine, UI changes, water, shadows, etc. Although Blizzard has invested a bit of time into trying to recreate some of the old versions of those graphic engine features, too. Hopefully they get some extra time to make things as authentically classic as possible. We’ve still got a solid 2 months left!

In that same article, they state how their guiding principle is to make Classic WoW feel and look precisely as if you were logging into WoW in 2006. This means that the unintentional graphical changes gained with the Legion client are the extent of it, and nothing further will be adjusted outside of making things even more authentically classic.

TLDR: New models, new graphics, or anything non-authentically classic (even as a toggle) is extremely unlikely to occur. It goes against their published stated drive for the whole project, and that makes most of us here extremely happy.

The modern water textures are not an unintentional addition left in by the use of the modern client. Water textures are like any other texture, they could have removed the modern textures if they wanted but chose not to.

I know you’re bitter and want to take a Fesz style approach to arguing with me but it’s not going to work.

We’ve got 2 months still, hopefully that’s on the docket – but just not a priority. Authentic Classic WoW is the reality, and it’s just sad at this point that you’re going to continue to ignore that reality by kicking and screaming.

Yeah, you’re bitter. I’m not kicking and screaming about anything. They’re leaving the modern water and shadows in and other Classic communities have no issue with it. It’s only the old, vocal minority on these official forums that are kicking and screaming for their removal.

Stay salty old timer.

Hard to be bitter when us folks who want authentic classic, especially without any ridiculous things like new texture, new models, transmog, wow tokens, and all this other garbage clearly isn’t being implemented  I’m pretty happy

There is a slider to turn the graphics up, the game actually looks pretty good. It is definitely better than 15 years ago.

Have you seen the forums? Do you think most people are happy here? Cater to my preference? Hah, do you see the crying about difficulty and AV?

People would prefer anything but 1.12, that’s the general consensus on this forum.

Sure, I’ve seen all the #catertomypreference stuff getting shot down – and in a few cases, locked by blues. Things are going fantastic for authentic 1.12 classic. 1.12 is what was stated we’ll get, and 1.12 is what we’ll get. Authentically so, at that!

I agree, 1.12 with gated content and some modern graphical improvements is what we’ll get. It’s extremely unlikely for anything else to change, including AV as it’s already being tested on the beta.

We agree more than we disagree but yet you seek me out to engage in petty squabble.

Indeed, 1.12! Can’t wait.

This is exactly what I needed to know. I’m very excited for the authentic feel and look of the game but with a little touch up by accident. Do you know if they will allow their battle.net overlay so we can message battle tags and not just in-game characters?
