I kind of liked the pristines and wished we got our own museum to fill and show off our collection kind of like the old lorewalker rep. I guess they could do something with delves for that.
I’ll miss it as well. Loved it here and loved it in ESO. Probably because I wanted to be an Archaeologist as a child.
I dislike most, if not all of the professions in WoW but Archaeology was one I found myself doing just because. No quest/wq/daily quest or whatever that I can recall got me doing it. Just fun learning about the stuff.
A dang shame.
TBH, I had already forgotten it existed.
“Then ‘ow abou’ they make it so we can drink an’ not get drunk er somethin’?” shrug
That’s disappointing. Guess I better get back to grinding Troll artifacts to get Zin’rohk before they do something like removing Archaeology from the game.
They did suggest that during one of the later patches might experiment with something like Archeology, so there’s still some hope.
I think they just don’t want to bother redesigning it at the moment, don’t have a clear idea on how to reimagine it and want people to forget about it so they don’t need to do work there for it
It would have been a great time in BFA to do something, and in parts of SL, heck even in the dragonscale area, and now this… it’s a shame but
They’ll probably do something for the profession but it’ll be a LONG time.
It always felt odd doing archeology in a place where the guys were still living, killing trolls and gathering troll archeology fragments seemed…wrong somehow.
The vibe I got from Ion was that they wanted to create a new version of it, a new mechanic, but it wouldn’t be ready for dubya dub.
Developers who seriously want to make a new version of a system don’t just discontinue the existing working version first.
It’s a shame, I felt that in Legion that were on the right track with it, with a unique subset of quests and weeklies to do with it. It’s always been a casual thing and should be approached as such, we’re not talking BiS gear, but unique looking gear and fun little tidbits tied into with a history, those weekly rotating quests Legion had helped it stay relevant.
Also, just creating an archaeology hub in the capital cities would help with giving it some identity. You go there (if you feel like it) to get the quests that are on a long yearly rotation and just do them at your leisure. No real need to ham them in all at once and no real gain other than feeling you accomplished something that feels important to you.
Maybe one day when we have some form of housing we will get a return of Archaeology…but housing just doesn’t gel with the culture of this game unfortunately…a vocal minority.
Agreed. Our Garrisons had that fun little place for all of our artifacts. I thought that was a tiny step towards housing. I’d love to see more like that.
Archaeology is such a strange one, something the dev team seemed to be grappling with in a non-committal, we get its still there, but its not going to be a thing, for a long time now. So many references in factions and NPCs and treasures, with outright dirt and shovels, as well as just the general way stories progress in game with “uncover the mysteries of this culture”. Kind sucks, but hopefully the upcoming stuff is good.
I’m thinking that they currently just don’t have anyone on the team who’s interested in the Archaeology profession and they would rather pool the development resources to other things.
I think it’s the same way for Brawler’s Guild. They’ve said from time to time that they will bring it back in a more evergreen way, but realistically speaking, I really don’t think Brawler’s Guild is ever coming back outside of Classic servers when/if they get to MoP, WoD, Legion, and BfA. I think there’s not enough interest from the current WoW team to bring back Brawler’s Guild, and they’ve probably felt that there hasn’t been enough interest from players to justify the cost of development and maintenance of Brawler’s Guild.
I’d be shocked if Brawler’s Guild comes back before the end of the Worldsoul Saga because I just can’t imagine Brawler’s Guild being released in the midst of patches that will likely be more focused on the greater story arcs than probably ever before.
It’s strange though because Morgan Day in an interview that the team love Brawler’s Guild, so no idea what’s going on with that.
I’d be surprised if they ever do anything new with the Archaeology profession as well.
I’m okay with this, personally. As long as it feels fun.
<----- The whole reason I worked to get the Professor title! (This is Ow, btw)
Archeology was my relaxing time (Yo Blizz Bean Counters, time spent in game!). I hope they rethink ditching it. Really missed it not being in DF.
My impression over the years is that people liked the rewards and collecting aspect of archaeology.
But even people who liked that, usually hated the surveying mechanic itself.
