In game I use Incognito which adds (kiph) to all of my guild chat messages because I play a lot of alts and it’s easier for people to keep up with who I am. Works well enough that way. I don’t particularly want everyone on my gamertag, etc and a system like this that was opt in/opt out would just not be used consistently enough to have any impact on the game so it becomes pointless.
If you want people to know your tag, just get Incognito and put your tag in it.
I recently made this character in memory of my favourite singer, who used this name as a monk and died last year. The character would be meaningless to me if it had to go by my bnet name.
My vulpera, Chryso, is named after Chrysocyon brachyurus, a species which he resembles. Most of my other (close to 100) characters also have carefully chosen names that represent them in a way that’s meaningful to me.
So no thanks. I’d be disgusted if a change like this took place.
Not liking the idea. I’m not huge into RP but each character means something different to me and to have them all named the same would be annoying. Also, as others have started I will switch toons to respond to different topics. As an example is rarely talk about the light on this character, but my paladin yes I would.
No. Because some people’s Btag names are their real names, or way inappropriate. Blizzard tried to make this a thing years ago and the outcry against it was very loud. They ended up not doing it for legal reasons, if I recall correctly, because there are children who have their own accounts? Something like that. You can’t be letting underage kids putting their real names on a public forum. It’s not safe.
Well they didn’t say anything about me personally, I recall:
Them: “why does every message you send have “Kaurmine” in front of it?”
Me: “So people know it’s me”
Them: “Who cares who you are?”
Me: [Kaurmine alt] [Kaurmine]
I am definitely a no vote. It’s just a personal preference so applying a personal solution, of which plenty have been given on this thread, would be more fitting and less intrusive for everyone else.
There’d be multiples of people with certain btag names. and those that wanted anonymity would just change theirs all to a common one or ‘anonymous.’ Sure Blizzard would be happy to get $ from B.tag name changes though. I think it’d be too much of a mess, no reason to really do it like that.
This gonna be a no from me for Privacy reasons. If they ever switched to this, I’d quit.
Also-- I have actual character names. It’s a huge part of my immersion in the game. Remove that, you’ve removed a huge integral part of My RPG experience.
A no-go for me. I want control of how my avatar is presented to the “world”. You don’t get to choose that, I do.
It’s a bit like RP add-ons. I am disappointed when the actual character name does not match the name that the add-on interjects (expanding the name excepted). If your character name is “Brillqt”… then if feels like “Charlie Norington” in your add-on signals - “not serious”, “may be mocking”, “cannot adapt” or “cannot possibly think of an original name”. I do consider that perhaps there is an existing body of work that the player is trying to maintain, and sometimes this is true - but so far that is an outlier.
Since we cannot truly craft a body type, your name is the front line of presentation. Unlike RL (in most cases), you chose it. It is a window to your personality. After that comes how you move through the world - do you park over NPCs, jump everywhere, fly into buildings, etc, etc. After that - mog. These markers can signal an entire host of things.
The genre requests that you become an inhabitant, your proposal requests that you join the legion of cyclical gamers who, whenever possible (and understandably), attempt to maintain their tag across platforms. While I welcome the cyclical gamer in theory and in heart, I feel that it is very hard to balance the two styles in this genre and that sadly, through no fault on their part, the attempts made to attract the cyclical gamer has been to great detriment to the baseline genre. It’s unfortunate.
Maybe they should do something similar to the ff14 forums. You choose a forum name and also which character/class you want to display. It would cut down on trolling since the forum name will be constant across characters and ppl can still rp or whatever on the forums by switching character.
Still going to be a no, since that is pretty much just a rewording of the OP. This is also a T for teen game and trackable names would not be cool on the privacy front. Minors(and the rest of us, for that matter) should be afforded privacy and there are people on the internet with bad intentions.
Do you want me to fabricate some game beneift to further my cause? I’m sure I could pull something out of my butt, I however like to be honest
Just because it’s a personal preference to me doesn’t mean there is no game benefit
Opt out
Opting out isn’t intrusive at all lol
I did! I learned so much in this thread about how people think, devs probably already knew this but I’m no dev so I’m unaware of human thought processes in regards to “privacy” issues.
There already are, the numbers at the end of the btag differentiate them and they would persist in game just not be visible.
If I want to do something I’m not supposed to do I can just make a whole new account Nothing stops people from misbehaving now.
But you know when people say “for privacy reasons” it doesn’t tell me anything. What’s the issue because you can opt out of the system if you don’t want to use it.
Yep, I’m never in favor of taking from players, that’s why you can opt out. You don’t have to display yours or see others. It would be like nothing changed.
I’m still confused by you guys saying “privacy”
My Btag is Drusyn, the name of my Druid I’d opt in and be Drusyn everywhere
If your btag is MarcusJones then … don’t opt in?
