I disagree with the “whole purpose” thing. Part of the purpose is to give people goals + rewards that are commensurate with the level of difficulty associated with being able to reach those goals.
Turning every reward into a participation trophy at best would boost participation up to the point that people collect their mount, mog, etc. before they quit.
It could also cause participation to drastically plummet, especially after all of those people get the no-skill required rewards. It wouldn’t be much different than things are now, where you have Kate, Jack, Jin, Sue, and Syed all quitting after they hit their respective goal of 1800 for the mog, 2100 for the enchant, etc.
Rewards are only meaningful when they are challenging to achieve.
If everyone could bench 400+ pounds and have a six pack without doing anything outside of benching the bar for 1000 reps and eating nothing but fast food, then who would really give a sht (it wouldn’t be impressive or meaningful anymore)?
If everyone made 100k/yr, 200k/yr, 1mil+/yr, etc. by dropping out of school and living with parents, who would really give a sht (it wouldn’t be impressive or meaningful anymore)?
If glad mount was free to everyone just for tanking mmr and farming wins at low mmr, who would really give a sht (it wouldn’t be impressive or meaningful anymore)?
These might not be great examples, but you get the point.
Aspire to be better than you were the day before. While I’m sure there are some exceptions, if you REALLY wanted to achieve ANY reward in this game (or out of it), you COULD do it (but most unhappy with the reward level they reach (in game or irl) aren’t willing to put in the time, work, humble themselves, accept constructive criticism, etc. that is required to grow/improve).
If you REALLY want the glad mount (or anything for that matter), stop thinking “I can’t get that because of x, y, z”, and start thinking “Let me figure out what I need to do to get that”
I think it’s boosting participation in the 2100+ bracket yes, just as the enchant boosts participation in the 1800+ bracket, and the elite mog boosts participation in the 1600+ bracket.
WoW arena participation as a whole is bad/suffering. The glad mount being difficult to achieve isn’t the reason lol (or at least not a meaningful one).
Accessibility, outdated/scuffed LFG, barrier to entry (aside from gearing), need for addons, the game being 19 years old, better quality/more accessible/better balanced (without pve interference) pvp games being out there (if you aren’t super into wow arena), blizzard’s unethical behavior(s)/action(s) as a company, etc. are way bigger contributors to wow arena suffering from low participation than any single cosmetic reward (imo at least).
