Glacial Spike Broken!

I HATE it when I make a post only to find the next day that it has disappeared. Lemme try this AGAIN:

Starting with 8.3 (and NOT before) I am finding that frequently my GS spell does NOT fire when I hit it’s keybind. Sometimes is does, but it also does not…meaning I have to notice it AND hit the key again. Seriously messing up the flow of my rotation and I can only be most effective when I get into the right flow to run my rotation.

Now I DO use Quartz for my casting bars… AND on the first hit of the keybind I DO see the kind of line advance that is typical of my Ice Lance spell… so the game IS seeing the keypress, just not “sending” my Glacial Spike. AND my IL is on 4 and my GS is on 6, so it can’t be hitting the wrong key… besides, like I said, this very much started the day 8.3 landed. I want to see if this is effecting other frost mages before I file a bug report.

To hell with that spell anyways. I been using thermal void or ray of frost and packed ice. Life is way more fun.

Try and see if you have the same problem using classic UI. May/may not be an addon issue, but usually addons get some kinks baked into them when a patch drops.

My gspike will randomly reset and let me spike twice in a row … but I think that’s a known bug ?

I’ve noticed that glacial spike will sometimes be unavailable to cast at 5 icicles, sometimes it IS available with <5, it doesn’t seem to be shattering as frequently as it should be, it sometimes doesn’t fire off correctly AND on top of all of that it seems to be doing less damage when it does work correctly.

Blizzard… what’d you folks do to GS? Whatever it was, please fix it.

I have cast a GS and down to one Icicle, yet able to cast another GS, a few times.

Frozen Orb is also overshooting mobs, so having to blink thru to put them in the orb.

Also my cast time feels like it has gone up slightly, that could be server lag though

That’s been happening since 8.2. Blizz made it so that FO keeps traveling for a few more yards even after hitting the first mob.

The only workaround is you have to be at least 10-15 yards away from the mob pack before launching orb, so the orb doesn’t overshoot them.

I am tracking via a TMW when I have 5 icicles up… has always worked perfectly until this current patch. Never really noticed if it was enabled with less than 5, theoretically I should never get the icon unless there ARE 5 up. At least I see that at least someone else notices this… it is VERY maddening…

After seeing your post I started playing with it last night! It is REALLY fun, thanks

Dealing with GS has always felt a bit clunky, not that I’ve ever really minded it, but it is nice doing something different, and the DPS is surprisingly awesome even though I don’t have packed ice (ugh fking azerite traits, is shadowlands here yet? :stuck_out_tongue: )

From what I read, if you have 3 Packed Ice traits (I do not, have 3 Flash Freezes) then better to use the Orb build.

Yeah its a blast. At first I was figuring I would only see benefit from it in my mythic plus runs. But turned out I could squeeze out a high amount of raid damage (for my GS) with it also.

NoIL is still better according to the simulations provided here.

Not by much though which is a good sign, and as these are a patchwerk sim we can realistically expect FOrb to pull ahead of NoIL in actual boss fights, especially later in the tier with bosses having higher movement requirements. Same goes for Arcane, which anyone who has played it will tell you gets tanked by movement.

More importantly though, FOrb isn’t sitting too far behind Fire. It has interchangeable talents in SI/FR and TV/RoF with about a 1% difference. It’s also worth noting that RoP is not a requirement for FOrb (3% damage loss on perfect use), which will be a significant factor for people like myself who will never play a spec that uses RoP.

It may or may not. With proper positioning and usage of shimmer you’re able to keep a high up time in the majority of encounters–but I’ll have to actually do these new fights to see before I really make up my mind.

I intend on going GS build again just because I prefer it over orb build in the majority of cases but honestly, I’ll use both at the end of the day.

I would never trust PTR sims on margins as low as 2.31%, and especially not with this patch.

Glacial Spike has its uses, but if I want to sit still for 5 mins to cast a single big ST hit, I’ll just switch over to arcane.

Exaggerate much? It’s something like 2 and change seconds. STILL, having to madly tap on it’s keybind is a BIG issue, at least for me.

This is incredibly annoying…

I had this happen to me yesterday I assumed it was a essence or something. It was a ton of extra free damage though.

THIS so much THIS! I find freezing things first helps it “stick” on launch but otherwise I have to kite things back through it ><
