To get from 1- 500 in Blacksmithing using the Ghost Iron training projects it’s costs 9942 Ghost Iron Ore in total. Who’s in god’s name at Blizzard felt that was a reasonable cost?

Maybe don’t think of it as leveling exclusively with ghost iron, and more using them to fill in gaps
Blacksmithing is the only primary crafting profession that even has that luxury in the first place

for example from what it seems using ghost iron might turn out to be cheaper at 300-450 range, due to usually high prices on fel iron/adamantite/cobalt, for the rest at least you have a choice if you want to use classic mats or ghost iron
At least for 1-300 there is almost certainly an uncontested zone for each ore type; you can spin in circles and farm up a proper storm. I would assume the prohibitive costs of the training projects are to encourage you to head out into the old world from time to time.
It’s a player driven market though… What?
If it’s too expensive then mine Copper > Tin > Iron > Mithril > Thorium > Fel Iron > Adamantite > Cobalt > Saronite > Obsidium > Elementium.
