Get rid of mail armour in game

But if they get rid of “mail armor” in game, how else am I supposed to send stuff to my alts to sell on the AH?

Thanks for coming everyone! Be sure to tip your wait staff!

Ever seen leather armor? Or a Zulu shield? Leather can be hardened into some VERY durable stuff…

Yeah but it’s not stronger than mail, and when fighting wild animals I wanna be as safe as can be.

To be fair, nothing’s really gonna protect someone from a giant dinosaur or a acid spitting giant insect… except maybe leather as it’s slightly more durable against certain chemicals/fire. Ideally the Battle Mages have the right idea, plate is gonna be much more useful against most things.

Yeah but still. Even if leather is durable, a sharp claw, fang or sword will go right through it. Mail is historically on of the best armour types.

Again, by this logic, we should all just be wearing plate. It also doesn’t really matter what you’re wearing when things like Worgen claws are stated to tear through steel…

What about Male armor

Plate has the flaw of being outrageously heavy and hard to move in, mail is the perfect mid ground.

What game content is being nuked? The damage bonus that literally every other armor class has for wearing a full outfit of said armor?

I don’t think it’s too much to ask that Blizzard stop being lazy with their mail armor designs (because there are even plate armor designs that look good, so a function>style argument doesn’t really have a foothold to stand on here) or allow classes to opt into other armor classes that helps a player feel comfortable with their character.

The perfect “middle ground” has historically been to use multiple types of armor layered over each other, see Asian lamellar using scale mail/leather, European armor using partial plate and mail, etc.

I think maybe in WoW it doesn’t make sense, but anytime I’ve ever seen someone described as a shaman in books, movies, tv shows, etc… they were always wearing cloth.

Fun fact. A full suit of armor is not as heavy or cumbersome as you might think.

An entire suit of field armor (that is, armor for battle) usually weighs between 45 and 55 lbs. (20 to 25 kg), with the helmet weighing between 4 and 8 lbs. (2 to 4 kg)—less than the full equipment of a fireman with oxygen gear, or what most modern soldiers have carried into battle since the nineteenth century.

I think it would be best if Blizz just let us mog our gear to look like what we want it to look like. Cloth, mail, leather, plate, etc…

Armor really should just be cosmetic at this point. Every class has defensive abilities that can be raised or lowered to provide the devs desired amounts of mitigation. Let players look how they want!

As a Hunter main, I agree. Mail is pointless and restrictive for no reason whatsoever. Just move mail wearers to leather.

I mean it already is leather, it’s just heavy leather. There hasn’t been any metal in mail gear for a decade since they switched mail to leatherworking instead of blacksmithing.

it’s a two way street; if paladins are allowed to wear cloth, then mages should wear plate too. The Kirin Tor battle mages have been doing it forever; why can’t players?

And that would be fine. I too find a lot of the mail armor designs lacking, but maybe other players like looks that I don’t care for. But that wasn’t what you asked for in your post. In the absence of creativity, you were okay with removal of mail armor, not keeping mail and just broadening your transmog options to other armor types.

Having played characters with all of the other armor types, I’m not sure where hunters would find a visual home. Most tier sets tend to lean hard into specific class or raid themes, like druids looking like trees or bear people. The leather Sootfur Garb set from WoD just got reused as the Dark Ranger set that hunters can use, but it’s pretty bland. I doubt there were many leather-wearers using the set from WoD when there were flashier options available.

On one hand, canon lore shows any and everybody using whatever armor they want… on the other hand leaning the other direction PC identities are not canon, they are purely RP.

Well that really depends. Not all hunters or archers are created equally. For example “tracker” type hunters might value stealth. While archers who stand behind armies and launch arrows at opposing armies would probably really appreciate having 90% of their body covered in chain mail since they don’t move much and are sitting ducks waiting for arrows to hit them while they launch arrows.

At the end of the day, this is really a pointless post. They aren’t going to remove 20 years worth of transmog from the appearance windows nor from professions no matter how much you may think it makes sense.

It’s an interesting position because at one point hunters were both. They could use leather or mail which made sense. If you were going into in open fight chain mail, if you are hunting you would have leather.

Who said anything about removing it? Moving it into leather just renames it leather and allows both types more options. And as pointed out by Nutts, mail hasn’t really been “mail” for a while now, it’s really just glorified leather in most cases.

To be fair, leather is just as useful for this, see samurai who were just as much archers as they were swordsmen and cavalry men.

Sorry, I’m not for dumbing this game down any more than it already is. That is how games die and how WoW is turning into an instanced lobby instead of an open world MMO.
