Genn's dual timelines

Confused? I’d be surprised if you weren’t. Apparently, Genn is starting two new timelines during the battle for dazar’alor. Explanation? feast your eyes on this…

Horde Side
"Genn Greymane: King Rastakhan of Zandalar…I order you to submit! You will bow before your new master, King Anduin Wrynn, and you will deliver your daughter to us as a hostage!

King Rastakhan: You…an exile without a homeland…you dare invade dese sacred halls and demand dat I turn my kingdom over to you?

King Rastakhan: De Zandalari built an empire dat would endure for over ten-thousand years…while your barbaric ancestors scuffled in de dirt.

King Rastakhan: WE conquered this world. WE brought it glory. You…you are nothing. Merely de latest in a long line of savages seeking to undermine our greatness.

King Rastakhan: No, I will not surrender. Because no matter what happens here today…Zandalar will stand long after your Alliance has crumbled to dust.

King Rastakhan: But if you are so eager to meet Bwonsamdi…den step forward. De Loa of Death awaits!

King Rastakhan: Zandalar forever!

Genn Greymane: So be it. Heroes of the Alliance…strike him down! No mercy for this savage!"

Alliance Side

Genn Greymane: King Rastakhan of Zandalar… On behalf of the Alliance, and in the name of King Anduin Wrynn, I hereby request your surrender.

Heroes… you know what must be done.

So… uh… Why do dis?

unreliable narrator, it’s blizzard intention to motivate horde players.

Unreliable narrator, so basically just a meme. Horde side you’re told the story through a zanda troll that was present, whereas alliance side you you know happened because, well, you were there to see it.

No real point to it, as the horde side dialogue is corrupted and didn’t actually happen. It’s just another narrative technique.

Getting real tired of blizzard abusing unreliable narrator. At a certain point, it stops being a “smart choice” and becomes a crutch for a poorly written story.

? When else has this occurred?

This is the only occasion I can think of where there is a factual event, but retold differently (unreliable narrator); the two juxtaposing.

As the Horde experiences the Alliance bosses (Opulence, Council, Rastakhan) through the account of a Zandalari troll - I believe it’s the Blade of the King or something - his version of the story is an exaggerated retelling of what actually happened, as directly experienced in the Alliance side.

Similarly, I’m sure the account of the Horde bosses for the Alliance side (Gelbin, Tidewall, Jaina) has similar exaggerations of the Horde characters. I can’t say personally, I have yet to do the raid.

I’m only 6/9, so i couldn’t tell ya.

Well I’m 0/9, so you’ve got a leg up on me.

Horde side for those three bosses there isn’t much actual accompanying dialogue - for Mekkatorque, it’s him and Gallywix going back and forth, for Blockade it’s the dude taunting us, the girl telling him to stop taunting, then Nathanos telling us to kill them to make them st’fu. Isn’t really anything for Jaina. Of course as I’ve only cleared it on horde, there could be corruptions, but I doubt there could be anything like what happens with pre-Rhastakhan dialogue, as it’s hard to corrupt dialogue of the faction that is retaliating.

Genn split the timeline because he was uncertain whether he wanted to be rude or not. And now he doesnt exist on any timeline.

broken shore.
“the horde ABANDON US!”

lines from the alliance narrator is saying how savage and bloodthirsty the horde is while saying that jaina and mekkatorke are basically the best heros ever (and i agree with that :’) )

I mean, that’s just not having the full story, not an unreliable narrator.

Beat me to it.

it isn’t? hmm nvm then.

I don’t think that’s an example of unreliable narrator, as it’s more two different perspective of the same event - but I definitely see your point.

That’s not really an unreliable narrator RE the alliance narrator, since that’s just (whoever is “retelling” the story for the alliance) their opinion on the fact, in the same way that Talanji calls the alliance monsters and butchers for killing daddy dearest.

It’s official people. The Alliance hates Dadgar. You monsters! He is too good for you! Calling him second rate!

you are right.

a true example is about some marines in stormsong telling how they beat the crap of a kraken with their bare hands, really funny quests.

It’s really more a meta unreliable narrator rather than a literal one, and not exactly one that has a twisted version of the account. The unreliability of the Alliance cinematic stems from omitting the context for the Horde’s retreat. If you played Alliance and nothing else, the game would lead you to believe the Horde abandoned you. However, it in no way tells you this - it’s simply just a conclusion you draw from not having the full story.

Or the Deathwing thing in < whatever irrelevant vanilla levelling zone >; good for comedic relief.

Badlands. The Stormsong quests are a direct reference to The Day Deathwing Came.
