GeForce RTX 3070 should offer RTX 2080 Ti level performance for $599

The new Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3070 being introduced at $599 would be a gigantic deal, as the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti – which it should have the same performance as – debuted at $999-$1199 in September 2018.

So, are we believing the rumors?

We already know there will be a 12-pin PCIe power connector on the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition graphics card (which requires a huge 850W power supply), but there’s some new dirt on the cheaper GeForce RTX 3070: it should beat the current Turing-based flagship GeForce RTX 2080 Ti.

Tom from Moore’s Law is Dead tweeted out that he can confirm the GeForce RTX 3070 has around the same level of performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. He adds that “you all can do the math on how much stronger the 3080 & 3060 are relative to this based on the previous gen” with a nice big fat wink face emoticon at the end.

  • GeForce RTX 3090: $1399
  • GeForce RTX 3080: $799
  • GeForce RTX 3070: $599
  • GeForce RTX 3060: $399

If true, I’ll probably buy it.

Wonder if that’s Founders Edition pricing or AIB models. Not that prices are official or anything as of yet, but that’s probably really close.

FE models have a stupid premium on them

so perhaps $549 base models from the aibs /crossfingers

I know, I know … they’re probably going to get me too…

Sneaky devils…

Let’s see how much they stomp my RTX 2070. I was really planning to wait another generation since the upgrade from my 1050ti and my son’s 1060 was pretty significant. If the rumors are true and these are the beasts they look to be then - ok no stop it, c’mon girl, just say no (internal dialogue)…

Let’s be honest here, you’ll cave and probably grab an RTX 3070, and i will probably cave once they make it into laptops.

Likely for the desktop, unlikely for laptop

i don’t use laptops outside of work and they issue me one

Lol they’re expecting people to shell out 400 for their mainstream card? I’ll stick with AMD GPU’s thanks.

well if the 3070 is ~2080 ti perf for $499 and offers usable RTX

then it’s probably reasonable to assume the $399 3060 will offer ~RTX 2070 super or RTX 2080 level of performance and usable RTX

while the 5700 xt is around $380 for slightly less than 2070 performance, with no RTX.

Without a price drop or their own options, nvidia will be the go-to options at those price points.

That’s why I’ll wait for AMD’s new lineup, so it’s apples to apples.

It’s likely big navi will be good - I use mostly AMD GPUs as it is. But my daughter is still using an old GTX 1060 3gb, and my son is using an RX 570. Ideally, I can upgrade to 3000 or big navi, give my wife the 5700xt, give my son the vega 64 and retire his RX 570.

My daughter doesn’t really game, so she doesn’t really need a new GPU, but the RX 570 is getting a bit long in the tooth for a lot of games these days.

I’m still using a RX 480 4GB which I don’t think can handle the new generation, so I’m gonna need a new GPU pretty soon. I might just get a new console instead since I also need more memory.

unrelated but i’m so excited about this

on PTR, with the new Greyman fur, new 2h frost (Might of the Frozen Wastes), new animation for obliterate and allowing you to use blood artifact transmogs…

oh my god it’s so damn cool. made a video

I wonder if 3xxx series cards below the 3090 (or whatever it’s being called) will be as huge as the 3090 is rumored to be, and if they are if that’ll be specific to reference cards or the AIB cards will be chonkers too. I’d bet that there’s a ton of builds out there that can’t accommodate a 3090-sized card without serious changes to cooling, case, etc.

Mine can’t. Sad face :frowning:. Guess the 1080ti will have to last a bit longer

those prices are outrageous, it’s been ten years since I had an ATI/AMD video card in my main PC but I have no problem dumping Nvidia either.

2080 ti was $1199
2080 was $699
2070 was $499
2060 was $349

They keep increasing the floor.

It’s part of the reason I’ve been buying AMD for the past 5 years - since I rarely ever buy top end anyway.

I agree with both of you. This is one of the reasons that, when purchasing for myself, I typically buy one generation older than current when I’m shopping - I’ve never liked the idea of paying a premium for something that will be so quickly replaced. Business purchases might be calculated a bit different when pure horsepower might be needed on one end, while on the other end, some users only need email/Office/browser, so they can use ever lower end tech.

I’m happy with what I paid for my current rig - on sale, it was less than it would have cost for the parts. It was nice to have the latest (if not top of the line) nice and shiny, but not something I’ll do regularly unless the price point is compelling.

I got an RX 470 a looong time ago at my local Fry’s (before it totally started dying). IIRC I paid $169 for it.

It was an ASUS card, and failed a couple years later…but I RMA’d it and was upgraded to an RX 570 from ASUS. Not a bad deal. It still in use today and actually is still a relatively competent 1080p card.

The real big brain move from Nvidia was the GTX 1660 Ti. Or as I liked to call it, the $279 GTX 2050 Ti.
