Hey there, so I just hit 80 and been looking at ways to reach def. cap and start running heroics, currently have mostly my old lv. 70 tank set and the titansteel crafted shield, would love recommendations. Blacksmith pieces are far between and rather expensive, I could aim for them if they dont get replaces super easy once I actually start on heroics, otherwise it’d be a huge waste of money. Please advice.

Here is my personal 2 cents:
- Go Farm honor. Like ~50,000 ish. This is enough to buy full Furious 239 ilvl PvP set.
- Gem it fully with +24 Stamina gems and maybe cheap enchants. But not necessary.
- Buy 200ivl BoE shield from Auction House (~700g).
Then go off tank RDFs non stop. Get all that 225 gear from dungeons and farm up 100’s of Triumph emblems to get 5/5 232 tier set. Keep farming badges to get
245 trinket for 50 badges.
245 ring for 35 badges
Try to start a ToC 10 normal run to get some 232 weapon/shield.
Do VoA10/25 weekly for a chance at tier set.
Keep farming Scourgestones from RDF to get another 245 stamina trinket.

Got the ilvl 200 crafted shield. PVP with subpar gear sounds positively horrendous though, but I guess its better than failing at heroics or overspending on the AH. Are the tempered titansteel items any good?
Titansteel items aren’t bad for a fresh 80. Likely replaced quickly, though.
If you can, any BoE gear from raid drops is going to be a solid starting point. Cloak of the Iron Council, Signet of Winter, Signet of the Earthshaker, Signet of the Traitor King, and Indestructible Plate Girdle.
Someone else suggested PvP gear for tanking. That’s not gonna be a very good time. If you are getting PvP gear, then it might be best to either try your hand at being DPS to farm up badges from RDF/raids, or stick to normal dungeons to snag the couple of smaller upgrades.
Of course, you could buy all Furious gear and then socket almost pure avoidance. PvP gear is already loaded to the brim with Stam and armor, so you’re not really gonna be worse off in that department. And the resil will make you crit proof. Just keep in mind you’d want Furious gear which you can find at the Area 52 vendor only. You could also just replace some of your pieces with PvP gear, more likely the Wrathful off set pieces available from Org if you can.
The ICC/ToGC blacksmith pieces are absolutely worth it if you can. The Ulduar ones are also pretty good. Tempered Titansteel are honestly barely worth the raw material costs, with the boots being especially bad.
You also need to reach certain gearscore bracket to queue for Gamma.
And PvP gear will get you there.
Just make sure to use your shieldblock and Demo shout on every pull. None of the dungeons are really hard. Don’t pull 2-3 packs at a time. Go slower but steady.
You can buy some tank BoE’s off the auction house as they are so plentiful from gammas & can be very cheap, rings, cape etc
Normal VH has a great trinket for new tanks
The crafted Chest and wrists wont be replaced until ICC. They are still going to be kind of expensive but they wont be replaced. Indestructible Plate Girdle and Saronite Swordbreakers are also pretty good since they have quite a lot of gem slots and wouldnt be replaced easily.
For heroics you only need 535 defense to not be crittable. Resilience can make you non-crittable and for regular heroics would be fine since it would be massively outgeared at this point. But anything past that I would only use those pieces if you fall short of defense.
I wouldnt get the ICC crafted stuff though. The legs dont have and defense on them and are really for geared tanks that are looking to drop defense rating somewhere and the same goes for the boots. Neither of them have defense on it and arent good for when you are looking to get capped. You can get a 219 shield from the ICC dungeons on normal. HoR to be specific.
A lot of items are still quite expensive depending on your server. Pillars of Might are 16k on my server and its just not worth it. Getting into tanking at this point is probably going to be the most annoying thing. You can also get a tank weapon from the Tournament grounds. Though it will take 3 days I think to get it.
