Fifty Foot Delivery Service
I thumbed through my phone. I was looking for someone who was hiring in town as it was about time I went back to work. This wouldn’t solve my living arrangement issues with Carien as I stayed with her until things calmed down between Fredricks Fancy and me, but the money I did have coming in was drying up. Fredricks Fancy finally decided to encourage me to come to them; they would stop paying me my royalties. I had no intention of running to them and becoming a lab rat of theirs, but I did need money to get me by.
Suddenly my phone rang, causing me to drop the darn thing. After I composed myself, I bent over and picked it up and answered, “Hello?”
“Is this Sarah Collinsworth?”
“Yes, who is this?”
“Jeffery. Jeffery Telsmark.”
I crossed my arms. “Aren’t you the person who runs the postal service in the county?
I didn’t do something wrong, did I?”
“Oh no. I was calling to see if you wanted a job.”
I clenched my fists. I have a job offer. Keep it together, Sarah.
“Why is that?”
“Well, I am always looking for new and innovative ways for our drivers to deliver our packages on time. Drones were the craze of the last few years, and we have been figuring out how to implement them. But I have seen your commercials, and it got me thinking. What if you came to work for me?”
“So I assume you want me to grow into a giant and deliver your packages?”
“Yes, sir ree.”
“Look, I tell this to everyone that tries to use my size-changing habits; I can’t really control if I grow or shrink, or I might even transform into something.”
“That is totally fine. If you shrink, you can help out at the office for the day. And if something else happens, consider it a paid day off.”
“Wow, I have never had someone so accommodating before.”
“Well, you will help us out a great deal. Having someone who can grow as massive as you will cut down our delivery times, and when you shrink, you can help us deal with some sensitive situations at the office. We get quite a few people sending us threat mail, and well, it would be nice for someone who can fit inside the package to make sure it is what is on the label before we umm. . .”
“You want to do what exactly?”
“We can talk about it later. Do you want the job?”
“Well, I don’t exactly get jobs every day where people let me enjoy changing in size. I will take it.”
“Good. Come down to my office later today, and we can get things straightened out. Maybe even have you go on your first delivery route?”
“Ya, sure.”
“Happy for you come on board.” He hung up.
I sighed. I just hope that this doesn’t turn out as bad as the last people who wanted to use me for my unique abilities. I shook my head. Also, what am I going to do? Why did I just accept that job when it will just make my spontaneous size changing and transformations worse? I slumped down on the couch. I guess I have to accept that this is my life now.
I am always going to be in flux.
I heard the front door creak open. “Sarah? I am home.” Carien walked into the room and threw her purse down onto the table. “I am going to go clean up, and then do you want to go out for dinner? I thought we could—“
I stood up. “Sorry, but I have to head out to the other end of town. I got a job offer.”
She crossed her arms, wrinkling her work outfit. “We set time aside today so we could go on another date.”
“I know, and we will, but I was just offered a job. It is very sudden and out of the blue.
I will be back before you know it.”
Carien narrowed her eyes. “Alright. But you are going to pay for dinner then.” She paused. “Wait, what is this new job?”
“Umm, I am going to work at the Telsmark Postal Service.”
“Why is that urgent?”
“They need a giant lady apparently to run all over town and deliver packages, so I get an easy job.”
Carien tried to speak, her hand opening and closing. She finally just turned around and headed for the stairwell. I sighed. “I will be back as soon as I can.” I walked to the door, grabbed my jacket, and walked out into the frigid air.

As I drove into the Telsmark Postal Service parking lot, Jeffery was standing outside waiting for me. He was a round, dark-skinned man who smiled as I drove in. He had a blue uniform on with grey pants, which matched his balding hairline. “Hello, glad you could make it.”
I parked and stepped out of my vehicle. “Hi. It is nice to meet you finally.”
He nodded. “Same here. I am a big fan of your work.”
I sighed. “I didn’t intentionally do most of those commercials.”
“Still, you were great. And I know you will be great working here.”
“So, did you want to show me around or something?”
Jeffery shook his head. “No. We don’t need to show you inside until you actually have a shrinking day. Until then, you will be working outside, carrying our cargo around.”
“Ok.”
“In fact, if it isn’t too much of a bother, you can get started today. We have something that needs to go out now, and one of my drivers called in sick at the last minute. You would be a lifesaver.”
“I have a date later tonight.”
Jeffery waved his hand. “Do this one delivery and then walk over to your date. I am sure they don’t mind you being a bit big for the night.”
“I don’t. . .”
“I will pay you double for the day.”
“Ugh. . .” I tapped my foot on the ground. I needed the money, that wasn’t a secret, but I couldn’t just run out on Carien. Maybe I could just run this package across town real quick and then go on our date. I hope she wouldn’t mind if I came back a few feet taller than before.
“Alright. I will do it.”
“Ok then.” Jeffery moved his arms back and forth. “How does this work. What do we need to do to make you grow?”
“Do you have any Fredricks Fancy products around?”
He nodded. “Yes. I have to keep them stocked because Beth has an addiction to the sparkling water they make.” He shook his head. “It is a bit crazy if you ask me. Follow me.”
He took me inside the primary office. There was an old fashion ceiling fan directly above a checkered patterned rug. Jeffery walked behind the main counter and into the back room, later emerging with a Fredricks Fancy Sparkling Water bottle. “Here you are. What are you going to do with it?”
“I have an umm, reaction when I drink this.”
“Well then. Just make sure you grow outside. I don’t want the property damaged.”
I nodded. I didn’t think outgrowing the office of my new job was a good idea anyway.
I took the bottle, drinking the contents as I stepped out the door. I could feel my skin shiver as I walked, the product taking effect already. Wow, I no longer have to wait anymore for the magic to happen.
My skin felt like rubber as I began to grow. I looked down at Jeffery, who stared up at me with wide eyes. “I don’t believe it. This is amazing.” I laughed as I continued to grow, enjoying every second of the process. My clothing was growing with me this time. That is nice as I have a job to do. I wonder why, though. Eh, it isn’t that important.
I grew until I was a good fifty feet tall, dwarfing Jeffry. My heels pushed one of the trucks into a wall. “Oops. My bad.” I moved out of the way, so I wasn’t damaging the vehicle. “I am a bit clumsy when I grow.”
“That is ok. Can you hear me?”
I knelt down. “Yes.”
“That truck that your heel pressed against. I need you to carry it over to Stadium Drive and deliver the one package that is left in there to the Yestal Pretzel shop on the corner. It is a restock shipment that needs to go out today.”
“Ok, I can do that.”
Jeffery gave me a thumbs up. “Great. I will give you your paycheck tomorrow for this as I know you need to rush off to that date of yours after. Good luck with that now that you are massive and all.” He walked away, chuckling.
I sighed and looked at the truck. It had the Telsmark logo on a dent on the side where my foot had banged into it. I picked it up with both arms and cradled it in my armpit. “This is just like carrying a box. A rather awkward brown painted box that I could drive.”
I ran across town for the Prestel shop. I wanted to make this delivery so I can return home and make my date with Carien. I had to be careful not to step on any cars as I rushed across town. I had quite a few horns honked at me and angry voices as I made traffic come to a screeching halt, my foot landing in the center of an intersection or street.
“Hey, watch where you are going. You almost stepped on my car.”
“Sorry, I am in a bit of a rush.”
A few minutes later, I came upon the Yestal Pretzel shop. I stepped into the parking lot and set the truck down. I then realized that I had no idea how I was supposed to get the package out of the vehicle. “Crap.” I knelt down on the ground, my feet extending out into the street.
I could hear honking horns as I tried to get my fingers to open the doors on the truck. “Hey, I am sorry. Just give me a moment.”
“Move those tree trunk of legs. I have places to be.”
Just as I opened the doors, I felt someone ram into my left leg with their vehicle. I spun around and slammed my fist next to their car. “Hey. I said just a minute. I almost have the package I need to deliver out. Don’t make me drag you out of that vehicle.”
The man inside the car gulped. “Ok. Sorry lady.
Just hurry. I need to be at work yesterday.”
I sighed and shimmed the package out of the truck and into my other hand. I then stood up, allowing traffic to flow once more. I sighed as I knelt down next to the Prestel shop and knocked on its roof. “I have a package here. I am from Telsmark delivery service.”
I watched as Matt ran out and stared up at me. He wore the traditional Yestel Pretzel shop outfit, a grey and yellow tea-shirt, and grey pants. “What in the world? You?”
I narrowed my eyes. “You.”
“Why are you here, Sarah? To destroy the place that I work?”
I shook my head and dropped the package at his feet. “My new boss told me to deliver this. I didn’t know you worked here. Last I knew, you were still at the mall.”
“I was moved here after they shut down their location in the mall. A Fredricks Fancy shop took over the business location.”
“Well, I am not really sorry to hear that.”
He picked up the package. “So you are a delivery girl now?”
“Ya, what about it?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “Nothing. Get out of here. Don’t make me write a complaint.”
“What complaint?”
He crossed his arms. “Well, you did assault my roof, and if I do say so myself, you gave me a heart attack. I might have to. . .”
“Oh, don’t worry, I am going. You can rest assured your heart will be in perfect working order, you creep.” I stood up and walked away. I hated how Matt kept popping into my life. I wish that he would just disappear like a bad memory.”
Once I was out of sight of the Yestel Pretzel shop, I broke out into a run. It was nothing but farmland and forest between me and Carien’s house now. The sky was starting to darken. “I need to make sure I get back in time.”
A few minutes later, I came to a screeching halt in Carien’s driveway, sending dirt flying into her windows. “Crap.” I bent over and dusted off the mess I made as Carien came out. She was in a fancy blue dress and red heels.
“Sarah? What did you do?”
“Carien?” I stood up. “Umm, I did a test run of my new job.”
“But our date?”
I bent down. “We can still go on it.”
She crossed her arms. “You can’t even fit in the restaurant now. This is a disaster.”
I picked her up and held her in front of my face.
“Hey. Look at me. We are going on that date. Me being this tall isn’t a problem.”
“But I will lose the money on the reservation.”
“We will still go. Who cares if I am fifty feet tall?”
Carien laughed. “You are crazy.” She smiled. “And that is why I like you. Set me down so I can get my car keys.”
I shook my head. “Why when I can just carry you?”
Carien smiled. “Ok then. I like that idea.” I set her in my breast pocket.
“Hold on tight, Carien.”
She snuggled in. “Of course.”
