Gargoyle Lore

There’s still zero lore on one of the most interesting creatures in the game to me, the Gargoyles from Northrend. I kind of want to know… anything about them, literally anything. Were they copied by Ner’zhul from the Revendreth Stoneborn? Are they undead? (Some are classified as undead. The Demon Zelfrax also looks like a Gargoyle for some reason.) If so, what did they look like in life? Are they a natural race enslaved by the Scourge?

It’s currently unknown. Speculation ranges from them being a native species enslaved/raised to work for the Scourge, creations of the Lich King who was inspired by the Stoneborn, or even them being related or even created by Hir’eek, as other Wild Gods had created other species.

*"It is an age of darkness superstition and the sword rule.

"It is an age of fear… It is an age of Gargoyles.*

Nothing there gives an origin.

Unfornately I think the canon answer is now that they’re the Stoneborn from Revendreth given physical form. Fortunately, it means we have Stoneborn from Revendreth given physical form.

Are you seriously implying that the Shadowlands’s inhabitants can’t enter Reality despite the fact that we have an example of Draka showing up in a Legion base to steal battle plans and numerous examples of Nathrezim in reality on top of that?

The Shadowlands is a collection of Planes of Existence for those who pass into the Veil and aren’t claimed by any other Cosmic Force with the Arbiter’s function being to choose which Plane your tether for reformation is chosen for.

Souls that don’t pass into the Veil and stay in Reality still have a physical substance that can be interacted with to the point where they are in danger of being killed deader than dead.

The Veil is the safe haven for Souls while Reality and the Shadowlands are far from it. Any Soul that doesn’t want to risk oblivion would do well to flee the Kyrian constantly while searching for good hiding places to spend eternity.

In any case the Shadowlands is physical enough for everything in it to be able to interact with Reality so don’t act surprised at the notion of Stoneborn being able to be physically present in Azeroth.

She’s a Hero character, not subject to the restrictions of the typical Shadowlands dweller.

Nathrezeim are demons and as such not bound to the Shadowlands.

I’m implying that I don’t like Shadowlands or it’s portrayal of the afterlife at all.

They can’t

The only questline that addresses this is the Emeni Venthyr Ember Court Friendship quest

Where Emeni says she cannot enter reality unless she has access to her remains again, and needs your help in doing so

Thus it’s established that Necrolords who enter reality are only those who have access to their mortal remains or whose mortal remains still exist to begin with

Draka died on Azeroth. Presumably her bones just stayed where she died. Ergo she can enter reality as Emeni did.

It adds another dimension to the Legion destroying worlds whole sale.

I would bet this is an act of intentional worldbuilding cuz I’m mutuals with the dev who made those quests on Twitter and as we all know I complain about the worldbuilding a lot

Edit

Oh and of course Kyrians can cuz they have the power of Ardenweald that creates their wings

Thus presumably Night Fae can enter reality

Exactly they became demons and thus changed their metaphysical properties

So she still has at least one Fetter active?

Idgi confused

In the roleplaying game Wraith: The Oblivion, a wraith needs at least one fetter remaining in the living world in order to manifest and interact with it. A fetter can be an object, a place, or a living person. The wraith of Yogi Berra for instance might be attached to the fork in the road that led to his house. But if that fork gets destroyed by a road rework, that fetter is gone.

K, anyone have an idea for Northrend Gargoyles?

As far as we know they are natural born creatures of Northrend.

They can enter the real world, but like demons if they die they return to the Shadowlands. We see the Kyrians guiding souls to the Shadowlands. Same with Necrolords sending forces to defend the Shadowlands as well as the Nathrazim entering into reality,

My guess would be lesser stoneborn created by the Nathrezim for use by the scourge.

While you make a good case, this raises the question of WHY the Stoneborn would leave Revendreth for the mortal plane - especially given their loyalty to Denathrius, the Stonemother and the realm itself, and how they came to be in Ner’zhul’s service.
