i have often wondered this myself but as someone who regularly stays up till 3am playing i think it is safe to say that im sure blizzard looked at the numbers at some point and found their regular timeslot to be the least populated and chose it for maintence

I think the time slot has a lot more to do with available resources than the number of people playing. If they did maintenance at 3AM they’d have to make the sysadmins work overnight once a week. They’d also have to wake people up if things went wrong.
