Game is Running (Not)

I just downloaded an update to battlenet. When I launch the game from Battlenet it says “game is running”. However, is not. When I try to launch from the World of Warcraft launcher, I get the same message. My task manager tells me the game is definitely not running. Please fix.

Have you tried rebooting your system?

We often see that with multiple instances of the launcher running, but you can usually see that in Task Manager.

No, rebooting did not help. I still have the big blue button saying “PLAY” and the words “game is running” to the right of it, with no game running. Task Manager concurs. Before the battlenet update, I was playing the game with no problems at all.

Should also be asked: In Task Manager, did you also kill all instances of BattleNet and WoW (and any other things that look like either of them)?

Check your battle.net options. The message may be referring to battle.net and not wow.
There are options there for automatically shutting down battle.net when the game starts. You may need to play around a bit with these.

Battle.net will appear as agent.exe in task manager.

Yes, Beaupeep, but thank you

This is what I was referring to as well.

Sometimes things will auto-launch and require killing them and changing settings around.

Have you try scan and repair?

Thanks Nok. I changed the settings to make battlenet close down when I launch the game. However, when I relaunched battlenet, it already said “game is running” before I’d even pressed play. Pressing Play did nothing but refresh the Play button and it still says “game is running”. I cannot do a scan and repair because “the game is running”. I for one am tired of being told it is my computer causing the problem when minutes before I did the battlenet update I was playing the game fine with no problems at all. :frowning:

You’d be surprised though, how random things interact on your computer.

Sometimes something as “simple” as your anti-virus doing it’s job can cause a problem.

Check your computer for recent changes. Did you install something new? Change a major setting in your firewall or anti-virus? Download a file from somewhere, or visit a new website?

Any of these things can cause random issues to occur.

I literally was playing the game, exited the game to do the update, and tried to get back in and I get all these problems. I haven’t been to any websites, downloaded any files, installed anything new or changed any settings whatsoever.

It sounds more like there might be something wonky with the desktop launcher.

Follow the steps in the link below to uninstall just the desktop app and then re-install it.

I’m running the Beta version and while my launcher had an update, my game didn’t.

Have you tried using the Beta version of the launcher to see if it stops your issue with the PLAY button?

Deleted (made sure it wasn’t listed in task manager), reinstalled, same prob. “Game is running” with big blue play button clickable.

Are you able to take a screen shot of the launcher (leave/black out any personal info like account names etc) and upload it a sight like imgur to share it here?

You can share it by placing a ` on either side of the link to the image.

I know you also mentioned that you had already rebooted, but I’d do it again just to be sure.

Now I am getting a message: “Game is running. An update is available and will be applied when the game closes”. Except the game isn’t running and I am therefore unable to close it and get the update.

Try this, go to the Task manager, shut down anything Blizzard related in there. The go to processes, scroll to the bottom. Look for windows explorer, select that, then click the button restart.

A couple things.

  1. Check your system date/time and make sure they are correct.

  2. In your task manager, look for the process “WorldofWarcraft Voice Proxy”, select it and end the process.

Okay I have a screen shot ready to link, but how do I paste it from a file on my hard drive please.

BTW, I did have a notification that there was an update (which I couldn’t install as per previous), so I deleted battlenet again and reinstalled it. It still has the big blue button and next to that it says “Game is running.”. That is what it looks like, but if you want a screen shot, please tell me the how to load from hard drive to forum for dummies, lol

You will need to upload the image to a hosting site, first. Imgur is the most user-friendly just click “new post” in the upper left corner.

After that, you can copy and paste the url here by using the </> button in the chat box after highlighting said url. We can then copy paste it from there.
