Game Crashes Going to Character Select Screen (Mac)

This only started today, August 21st, 2024, which is funny because I don’t remember there being a big patch or anything recently. When launching the client, it logs in as usual, but when I get to the character select screen, before my Warband favorites group can load in, the game crashes and quits. I’ve tried restarting my computer, which has not fixed it. I get the “Retrieving Character List” message, but it seems the moment that that process finishes, the game freezes and automatically quits.

I’m hoping not to have to reinstall the game, but I’m wondering if this is a broader issue others are experiencing (and thus on Blizzard’s end) or if it’s just me.

Exact same thing happening to me. I am so glad you posted because I was beginning to believe this was going to be an issue on my side. I have played all of DF just fine, and now I cant get to character select screen. Black screen, I can see the character names to the right, but then it just crashes.

2021 Mac M1 Pro. 32gb.

Yeah, the game was working fine yesterday for me. I just did a Scan and Repair, but it didn’t fix the problem. I have a 2020 M1 MacBook Air, 16 GB of memory, running Sonoma 14.6.1.

Do any of you have the Mage Tower flail appearance on any of your Warband characters? There’s a report that trying to render the flail is crashing the Windows client at the character chooser if the character with the transmog is in the warband group.

I do, in fact, have that flail on my main - the protection paladin mage tower weapon. Aren’t computers fun? I know we’ve got maintenance tomorrow morning, so I might avoid deleting my WTF folder in case they fix this then and I won’t have to redo all my settings.

Hopefully A: this is the issue at hand and B: it gets fixed soon.

Well, this is quite interesting.

A moment of solidarity with the Windows majority. I bet it sucks.

what a wild anomaly out of left field!

Yeah.

You find spaghetti in the damnedest places.

Happening to me. Driving me nuts

I just got around this. I was able to spam click the lower part of the character select screen to select a character not in my favorites which seems to have prevented my paladin with the flail from rendering and crashing it. I was then able to login to my paladin and transmog his flail to a sword. Problem seems resolved until they fix it.

Thank you for posting this thread. I’ve been having this issue for a while on my Mac mini (2018). When I would launch the game, the new character selection screen would start to load, but I would only see the menu options on the top, side, and bottom. The background and the characters never actually displayed (the background was just black). After a pause, the entire OS would crash and reboot. Scan and Repair did not help. Resetting to defaults did not help. I figured that my days of playing WoW with the Mac’s built-in Intel UHD 630 graphics were over.

After reading this thread, I logged into WoW on my PC and removed the characters from the “Favorites” section in the right panel (I dragged them down below the Favorites section). Now that I have no more Favorites, the consolidated character view no longer attempts to load. Instead, I just get the individual character views like WoW always had in the past. I then logged out of my PC and logged back into the Mac. I can now access my characters individually and log in successfully. Problem solved!

i took a month off in the hopes that this issue would be resolved - but it’s not. after watching the game freeze and then crash my mac three or four times, i opened a ticket.
i’ve had technical issues in the past, but nothing which outright prevents me from playing like this.
i’ve been playing a long time, it would be too bad if this is the way it ends.
Sonoma 14.6.1
