From 1 to 10, how would you rate Blizzard's handling of Classic?

Now that the content release cycle is at its end, Classic is probably at the gates of going auto-pilot from now on.

Looking back at the last year+ how do you think Blizzard managed the return of vanilla WoW overall, especially considering how important it was/is for many people (a lot who most likely only came back because of this).

Numerical value + one word to describe it.

this is an arbitrary question.

there are so many different people with different view points.

this isnt like a brand new game with a fresh PoV.

this is a “remake” that everyone from here to the moon had preconceived opinions about how it should have been handled.

so any kind of scale based question is going to be biased towards or against the people who got what they wanted vs those who didnt.

Hmm… a 6.

They got the basics right but bungled things that should have not been an issue at all like batching.

No, it isn’t. And it’s weird to come here and say this when you could have just ignored it to begin with.

5/10, an overall mediocre execution.

The quality of vanilla systems carried Classic while Blizzard largely botched everything left and right, making a single good change for every 5 or so bad ones. They didn’t manage to put out a better product than the pservers that they shut down. The “Blizzard seal of quality” is a dead; when I see that Blizzard has touched something, I assume it’s the worse for it.

The game had much higher potential but Blizzard really put minimal time and effort into bringing that out.

When I see how bad some of their other remasters/remakes like WC3 Reforged are though I’m just thankful we at least got whatever we got because if Blizzard had a free hand in making changes the game would be toast.

Well the servers didn’t crash and burn. Didn’t vanish due to lawsuits and such. So well there’s that.

I’ll just say this, they wanted to try to recreate the vanilla experience, but gave us the final product. Phases should of been released with the major updates, not just content. Giving us MC and Ony on day 1 with the 1.12 foundation proved to be too easy.

Classic was a success, but the attempt to recreate the vanilla experience was a failure.

If you don’t count the lack of anything being done about botting: 7/10. The Black Lotus change could’ve happened earlier, but the overworld is still resource-starved overall.

If you count their alleged efforts against botting: 4/10 best case. I’d personally rate it much lower because of the reflection of the efforts on retail botting during Battle for Azeroth were literally nothing.

I mean that’s true, I’m trying to be optimistic and give them the benefit of the doubt because I know they had a lot of demands to keep up with but I look back on some of the things they did or allowed and just go “yikes.”

As some others have stated the handling has been about 5/10.

For me it has nothing to do with certain changes that some people think should have been made and everything to do with the obvious botting and cheating. They do these ban waves but it takes months and then it’s great for a little while but it goes back to how it was and sometimes worse than before (like now how we have level 4s somehow mining underground and fly hacking)

So the handling of that was bad and I know it’s the same in retail with botting etc so it’s the WoW brand as a whole. I don’t think they hire enough employees or run the proper software to detect or something. It’s either that or they really do want the money from the subs and an increased sub count for the shareholders. It’s probably both.

As for some of the changes this forum has demanded well I don’t think many of those are necessary, my rating is all to do with the lack of doing much about cheaters. Otherwise I really have enjoyed this game.

NoChanges ruined classic
Blizz attempted to appease that crowd at first, batching for instance, and only later decided that was the wrong call towards the end.
Could’ve been so much more - 6/10

Catering the the current generation of gamers? 9/10. Catering to the spirit of Vanilla? 5/10. End game? 2/10.

eh, 6.5/10
all the changes ruined classic. this game would have been much better without trying to draw in NuWoW players. I wanted the 2004 experience warts and all.

9/10 fix the servers so that 10,000 players can be in one zone, should have given us pre-nerf cthun, and should have never used layering. (should have just made the idiots who all piled in on high pop servers just be stuck with an unplayable experience for a week)

The lack of engagement from Blizzard was a huge disappointment. The mega servers, layering, scuffed batching/leeway, dumb changes and refusing to fix things that needed fixing…

The biggest gripe I have is the rampant botting/hacking/exploiting. It’s like Blizzard left one employee in charge of that. They could have done better but just didn’t feel like it. That’s the biggest let down of all.

+1 point for being released

+2 points for a world pvp phase -1 point for ending it early

No changes died 2 years ago. Now it’s either private server players or those who just use it to suit their agenda.

0/10.

They screwed up the release by not having enough servers. They compounded their error with the way they handled transfers resulting in severely unbalanced pvp servers.

They released content far too early in an attempt to appease try hard power gamers and streamers who should have been forced to abandon ship and swim back to retail.

They use no changes as an excuse to have a lazy, hands off approach to class balance and exploitation issues. Just for one example they could virtually eliminate the botting issues by introducing a WoW Classic Coin with it’s own value to the game. People are going to buy gold regardless of the system that has been proven. It should be run by Blizzard not outside enterprises.

I could go on and on so I will just say this. I still enjoy the game. It’s better than retail. I would rate it higher on fun factor but Blizzard’s handling has been atrocious.

The answer to this question has to be divided into different things rather than an all encompassing number.
Here’s how I’d rate it,

  1. Classic World Feel? - 10/10
  2. Classic Leveling Feel? 10/10
  3. Classic Battleground PVP? - 5/10
  4. Classic Raiding? - 7/10

They got the World and the leveling experience absolutely spot on. One can’t deny the great effort in this regards. I remember when classic launched last year and the leveling experience was soooooo good. The World of WoW felt alive after so long.

Those giving it a 0 are just objectively wrong and they’re opinions don’t matter.
