I got a Foreign Transaction Fee on my credit card when I purchased the Dragonflight expansion using Paypal. I’ve checked both my statement and with my credit card company. The fee was accessed to to the charge listed as PAYPAL BLIZZARDUS.
I clicked on the link from Battle.net when I purchased it. I’ve double check both my game and and account and I have the expansion, so I didn’t get scammed.
What gives? Why would I get a foreign transaction fee purchasing it from Blizzard US? Did anyone else get a fee like this?
A transaction fee like that would more likely have come from your financial institute and not Blizzard. I’d contact the bank and see what the fee was for.
I called the bank. The charge from the fact the PAYPAL BLIZZARDUS transaction was listed as a foreign transaction. I’ve used Paypal for many years and have never seen a foreign transaction fee on any other purchase I’ve made through them. Its not like the fee was huge, but if I start getting such a charge on my monthly subscription, that’s another issue.
While waiting to find out on this end, you also may want to poke at Paypal’s CS to see if there is some wonky setting or something on their end that may have triggered it? Doesn’t hurt to cover your bases.
And while hopefully one of our SFAs will poke their head in here, you may also want to bite the bullet and get a ticket in the system too - since a Blue response isn’t really guaranteed as this is a forum for players to assist other players. Bit of warning that ticket times are bit horrible right now (unless there has been an updated estimate I’ve not seen?), but it’s best to get it in the queue so it can be handled as soon as possible.
If you go to your transactions history and click on the Order ID, you can see if there was an additional fee from Blizzard. But I’m betting dollars to donut holes that the fee was from PayPal or your bank for some reason.
Banks tend to define “foreign” as “not ours.” For instance, say you’re with Chase. If you make a small withdrawal from an ATM that isn’t owned by Chase, you’ll not only have the usual ATM fees, but also a “foreign transaction fee” because you made a withdrawal from an ATM that’s “foreign” to Chase’s system, i.e. not theirs.
Not something you usually see from PayPal purchases, but it doesn’t mean that the bank thinks you bought something from outside the country… just a system they don’t own accessed your money.
It’s definitely Paypal. They hit me with it also but I was buying a sub from a foreign company. Once I terminated the sub and used just my credit card the fee went away. I have no idea why Paypal is doing it but not my Credit Card company.
It was definitely PayPal, but I think it’s more like using another bank’s atm. I’ve had my monthly subscription got to my credit card just fine. Its strange though I pay another game’s subscription with PayPal and didn’t get a charge this month. Its too, bad I liked using PayPal over the years so they might be losing my business. Maybe a new credit card bank too. Thanks to all who replied.
FWIW, it’s the bank that chooses to charge foreign transaction fees, not the entity accessing the money. You might want to see why they chose to suddenly flag PayPal for it.
Either way, I’m glad you were able to get it figured out!
