It was really two fold.

It was, as you said, allowing grouping outside of the server. It was also neutering so much of the game were communication was no longer needed.

The two are intertwined and reinforce each other.

I was present as this unfolded and I can tell you with absolute certainty that it was the introduction of CRZ that led to the dissolution of server communities. Not LFG–CRZ. A single point of failure.
