You just need to think of it as a dynamic glide 2.0. you have to get as high as possible to get as far as possible. Took me a while to get that on my dracthyr. I think people are treating it like they can fly but you have limited abilities to ascend.

I can never get a good glide going. It’s always Ooh an ore node, Oh fish. Oh something is sparkling I better land and see what it is. Oh there’s an explorer pack. oh… Poor dragon

Go get the runes and unlock the talents for it. There are some massive quality of life improvements. Even getting to 5 vigor and the middle tier vigor refreshes makes dragon flying pretty free and easy.
Use your flaps to go straight vertical and time them to get the full value. Learn to gauge glides to trigger the regen without losing too much altitude so you can translate refreshes into more straight vertical flaps/gains.
It really isn’t that hard once you get the hang of it. Still doesn’t change that this will very quickly grow to be a VERY tedious chore and task once we’re in maintenance mode and I expect many people will still default to vendor flight paths to get to their general destinations.

I hate people are mad about dragon riding being difficult when we would be trudging our way across the ground for 6 months before we would even get anything resembling flight in previous expansions

I took 2 physics classes in college so I should be a professional! I just got the dragon riding quest, but got side tracked by that talking dwarf and then logged in preparation for the maintenance.
