FOMO = lack of self control and self policing

This feeling of “fear of missing out” is made up by people who have problems with themselves and have issues of policing themselves in terms of playing a video game when these things aren’t even tangible.

No, it’s game design related. But, you’re right about one thing. It preys on people with anxiety and mental health issues in particular. One person I followed on twitter had a meltdown over losing rating in Solo Shuffle, because they thought they would never get the set they wanted, and I was legit scared for their well-being.

Though I expect you to get a lot of disagreement on this, I do agree for the most part. FOMO doesn’t really hold any weight unless you allow it to. For some reason it’s heavily attached to video games, but it’s also something we’ve all dealt with in real life. Not going to that party you were invited to. Not buying those concert tickets on sale etc.

I’ve personally gotten over FOMO, took me quite a few years but overall it’s allowed me to enjoy pretty much any game I play stress free.

Man if only there was a way to describe what is happening in this situation.

It’s a real thing that isn’t limited to video games. I’ve seen this behavior on cruises for example. People just “have” to do everything or they feel like they “missed out”. Their words, even when they admit that whatever it is doesn’t really even interest them. “But I don’t want to miss out!”. So they go do it anyway.

Think of it as pear pressure like brand clothes etc… Some people don’t give a blizz about it others live or die by it.

This tells me that they lack self control.

FOMO is a psychological phenomenon, but not a diagnosed disorder yet.

I would say that not doing every activity on a cruise ship is entirely unrelated to collecting things because they will later become unavailable.

Again, these have nothing to do with collecting things on the expectation that they will later become unavailable.

I have never met a person who collected things in real life the way people collect FOMO bling in WoW, people who appear to live in fear that some unavailable item they have had for many years might become available again to the unwashed masses.

If a supermarket cashier admired the pocketbook of a customer, and the customer told them they had bought on a trip to Paris, a custom design of an exclusive designer while on a trip the cashier would never be able to afford, everyone who heard that exchange would think there was something seriously wrong with that person.

players have to have a weak mind to be manipulated . Being able to not want everything that available is very achievable by everyone , just got to teach yourself disapline . Same with peer pressure etc , people Choose to do things , they are not MADE to do it .

I am not saying its not extremely difficult thing to do , I know it is , done it myself and it took quite a while to change and felt very painful , but it is very achievable and once you overcome a fear teh feeling is wonderful

\Why do they need every pixel available in teh game , what does owning them actually get them ( answer to that one is nothing BTW)

Fear is a driver of a lot of things.

FOMO certainly does exist.

It’s basically peer pressure- if everyone else is doing it, why not you? But in terms of an object, or sale, usually, that’s limited.

So, there’s a ticking clock now behind the decision that has to be made (fear that it will be gone), forcing you to decide sooner than later.

So many decisions we make just because our amygdala is going bonkers lol

It’s funny, I must have every Psychological condition besides FOMO. I don’t really care if I miss cultural phenomena, that new skin, that raid tier. I guess I’m more of a Patrick Starfish just kinda living under a boulder–come back when I feel like it and try to make a few friends.

You know what? Just for that, I’m gonna have to take you off my ignore list.

How did you see this post if they were on the ignore list

Is that you Bobby?
