Yall are talking about this like its something you have no control of. Like it’s depression or schizo or something.
But knowing how people are these days it will probably be considered a real ailment soon and we’ll have to go along with people’s delusions to not hurt feelings.
You guys realize YOU control yourself right?? I don’t walk into best buy and freak out because I can’t get everything in there.
If your so easily peer pressured I would do some inward reflecting and meditation.
The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.
And spiders, werewolves, snakes, and taxes.
and draenei.
Fully agree here, if people would just learn self-control this game could be so much better. But because people can’t control themselves, Blizz has to constantly nerf things and make this game worse.
Well if it isn’t the good old “I have it so no one else should have it and it you want it there is something wrong with you” thread. Classic.
That actually sounds like a couple family members of mine, lol.
They dont need it and it’ll sit in the box until they finally toss it out in ten years or so, but the word ‘SALE’ was on the sign so they have to have it.
Ive wondered if its a depression thing or OCD or just good old impulsiveness.
uh…hobbies are all optional. lmao. It doesnt matter if its collecting bugs or digital nothing. At the end of the day most hobbies have no real world value unless its coins, stamps, precious metals, whatever.
I just saw and entire collection of old glassware pretty much be ditched for nothing. Im sure it had some value to someone out there in the world, but finding a buyer in any reasonable timeframe wasnt going to happen, so the stuff was effectively valueless except to the collector.
This ‘fear’ of missing out isnt generally about fear, its about the excitement of collecting something we want. And certainly within an hour of our getting it we’ll hop onto the next adrenaline rush for the next thing to collect.
By your joke assertions, EVERYONE who collects anything has ‘problems with themselves’ lmao.
I can see why your OP here was flag bombed to be honest, with that broad spectrum insult.
Like politics!
there can be too much FOMO in a game, but that’s not the case atm.
FOMO andys - i think are made up of the bottom tier of players that just don’t want anyone to have special items they don’t have.
and they also want everyone on the same level as them at all times.
we have had a limited FOMO and an everyone gets a trophy system since BfA. end-game rewards have suffered for it - especially for raiding & high end M+.
systems/rewards team shouldn’t listen to crybabies/scrubs when it comes to the reward structure of the game imo.
we could also use some more end-game modes with mage-tower esque rewards (as in they go away, so they’re special/unique and you can flex on others in the future with them)
Ich habe the opposite problem, fear of caring too little. All is dust in the Wind. Here today; gone tomorrow. Unlike Nietzsche, I crave safety and introspection. When you’ve been in the lion’s den enough, eventually you realize enough is enough.
Take what you can get. Leave the rest. Or get thrown into an inter-dimensional portal in kingdom of crystal skulls.
There’s a disconnect between want and need ,once you understand that…your fine…just like a hoard disorder…they need to collect things to make them feel safe…it’s a aweful condition…I personally I’m the opposite…I’m a Minimalist…if I see a thing for a long time I have to get ride of it…if I have 5 quest that I have to do I need to get them off my log within 5 day time frame or I will just delete them…it’s wierd I know…I have to clear my bank… within about a month…it’s just too much clutter.
If only there was a term people could use to describe this problem of players “having issues policing themselves”.
I think the real issue we should be discussing is not whether “FOMO” is a real thing (of course it is, give people a break, no one is perfect), it’s why video game designers are now using psychological manipulation tactics to exploit known pitfalls in the human psyche instead of just making their products FUN so we WANT to play without cohersion.
And companies exploiting this for monetary gain is why people criticize companies for capitalizing on FOMO. It’s a problem that has grown exponentially since the early 2000s with social media and its only gotten worse.
Should people work on themselves to address their anxiety and compulsive behavior? Yes. But companies also shouldn’t be trying to exploit those things in their customers in order to increase profits.
not really a problem imo. we’re talking about WoW, and it’s been non-existent for the past idk…6 years? FOMO has been limited to seasonal handouts (for PvE)…lack of rewards can lead to burnout/player drop off - which is unhealthy for the game.
FOMO is not a one dimensional concept - it has multiple functions for a reward system, including artificial scarcity/rarity in the game…which is important for any collection.
it doesn’t need to go away for everyone else because a small portion of the population get all up in their feels cuz they quit the game, or don’t have the skill/don’t put in effort to overcome a specific challenge.
It def doesn’t exist for me when it comes to seeing the Titanic
It’s up to each person to decide how they respond to FOMO. It only has as much power as you give it.
This is a hot topic.
You should get your own blog.
OP is right. Things like addiction, phobias, and other mental health issues don’t actually exist.
Just control yourselves better!
