Did anyone else watch that video? I generally love his videos because he puts in a lot of work, but this one was interesting because it was an in-depth look at the cultural impacts of add-ons (that’s a vast oversimplification).
Anyway, I’d love to hear what others thought about it.
He’s a troll. He’s not here to argue in good faith. I mean, for god’s sake, he made a post attacking “Pseudo-intellectual garbage” with what amounts to nu-metal lyrics.
The dude doesn’t even make a point in his video. That’s part of the problem.
Non-fiction can typically be boiled down into one of two bins - either the intent is to inform the reader of something, or the intent is to persuade the reader of something, with some blending for “prescriptive” texts that go into detail of a suggested solution the reader might not be aware of or understand.
The video goes out of its way to avoid ever trying to make a statement of change, as if it is afraid that if it “makes a stand” that it will somehow lessen the merit of what it says, and yet at the same time, it avoids drilling into any detail for fear of getting “bogged down” (people who are choosing to watch a 1.5 hour video want the details).
Instead, what we get is skimming across the surface of jargon without ever really getting into anything of substance. We don’t really come away having learned anything, and we haven’t really had any opinions changed.
The video definitly made me feel vindicated in moving away from dungeons, but this is my biggest problem in WoW these days. From 2004-2012 I loved dungeoning and I picked my character based on what I thought would make more people want to group with me.
M+ has killed that for me. And I don’t begrudge people having M+ - good for them - but I do feel like the game isn’t enjoyable like it used to be, and I hope Blizzard has this on the radar. I really felt Torghast was that answer, but that’s been shelved.
Oh really? Pray tell what exactly you learned, beyond the term “instrumental play” (defining jargon is NOT an end onto itself, it is a means to simplify language to make a point, but devoid of a point it is worthless to spend time defining) or the very surface level statement that “people either play to win or they don’t play to win” which is basically a nothingburger statement.
I don’t know why you’re mad about jargon. Jargon exists everywhere. I feel like you’re lashing out at the video because a nerd was mean to you once.
Folding Idea’s two WoW videos are largely talking about the in-game culture and what’s been lost as the game evolves. I don’t know if I’d say that’s the “point” (what’s the point of any narrative?) but it’s a topic I enjoy. The game has changed. Exploring how and why WoW feels different is a worthwhile topic to me. I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you.
Furthermore, I don’t know why you have once again wandered into a thread you clearly intend to disrupt. This thread was for people who wanted to talk about the discussion, not crap all over it. But here you are again attempting to ruin people’s enjoyment.
