Folding Idea's "Why It's Rude to Suck at Warcraft" Video

Did anyone else watch that video? I generally love his videos because he puts in a lot of work, but this one was interesting because it was an in-depth look at the cultural impacts of add-ons (that’s a vast oversimplification).

Anyway, I’d love to hear what others thought about it.

Holy crap man, that is a 90 minute youtube video. I will need popcorn, a soda and maybe a bathroom break

He put a lot of work into it.

Warcraft commentary does it for you, huh? It’s coo  Judgment free zone

I actually just finished watching it.

I think it is a pretty accurate depiction of the current state of the game and of its/our community.

For me it basically tells me exactly why I have slowly ventured away (from WoW) for more meaningful game experiences.

Pseudo-intellectual garbage. I made the joke previously that the video should be renamed “Why It’s Rude to Waste 84 Minutes of People’s Time”.

Speaking in an NPR voice and using jargon does not mean you’re actually making an intelligent point.

Hey, thanks for putting this out there. I have not seen the video and the topic sounds interesting enough to check out.

I’ll check it out.

See ya in 90 minutes.

Do you have any counter points to his?

Or rather, was there anything he said that you largely object to or disagree with and why?

He’s a troll. He’s not here to argue in good faith. I mean, for god’s sake, he made a post attacking “Pseudo-intellectual garbage” with what amounts to nu-metal lyrics.

The dude doesn’t even make a point in his video. That’s part of the problem.

Non-fiction can typically be boiled down into one of two bins - either the intent is to inform the reader of something, or the intent is to persuade the reader of something, with some blending for “prescriptive” texts that go into detail of a suggested solution the reader might not be aware of or understand.

The video goes out of its way to avoid ever trying to make a statement of change, as if it is afraid that if it “makes a stand” that it will somehow lessen the merit of what it says, and yet at the same time, it avoids drilling into any detail for fear of getting “bogged down” (people who are choosing to watch a 1.5 hour video want the details).

Instead, what we get is skimming across the surface of jargon without ever really getting into anything of substance. We don’t really come away having learned anything, and we haven’t really had any opinions changed.

It’s basically the definition of a nothingburger.

Yes he does. He goes into great depth as to why it is considered rude to be bad at WoW. Did you watch the video or did you just “skim” it?

I found the video to be informative. /shrug

That wasn’t really the purpose of the video though.

I disagree. There was a lot said in the video. I would be interested hearing what you specifically took offense to or disagreed with.

The video definitly made me feel vindicated in moving away from dungeons, but this is my biggest problem in WoW these days. From 2004-2012 I loved dungeoning and I picked my character based on what I thought would make more people want to group with me.

M+ has killed that for me. And I don’t begrudge people having M+ - good for them - but I do feel like the game isn’t enjoyable like it used to be, and I hope Blizzard has this on the radar. I really felt Torghast was that answer, but that’s been shelved.

Oh really? Pray tell what exactly you learned, beyond the term “instrumental play” (defining jargon is NOT an end onto itself, it is a means to simplify language to make a point, but devoid of a point it is worthless to spend time defining) or the very surface level statement that “people either play to win or they don’t play to win” which is basically a nothingburger statement.

None of your responses convince me that you have watched the video or have any proper criticism of it or its content.

I don’t know why you’re mad about jargon. Jargon exists everywhere. I feel like you’re lashing out at the video because a nerd was mean to you once.

Folding Idea’s two WoW videos are largely talking about the in-game culture and what’s been lost as the game evolves. I don’t know if I’d say that’s the “point” (what’s the point of any narrative?) but it’s a topic I enjoy. The game has changed. Exploring how and why WoW feels different is a worthwhile topic to me. I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you.

Furthermore, I don’t know why you have once again wandered into a thread you clearly intend to disrupt. This thread was for people who wanted to talk about the discussion, not crap all over it. But here you are again attempting to ruin people’s enjoyment.

You could have easily defeated my argument by posting what you learned. Instead, you’ve affirmed everything I’ve said by saying nothing.

Or as the kids say, “gottem”. Lol.

You gonna give an example of a point the video made or no? Answer Sentenzas question.

This is a discussion; not a war

Whatever man. If you don’t have anything specific that is fine. You don’t like the video. I get it.
