Here here!!!

Engaging content; enough of it in the expac so my alts have something to do after I’m done leveling. . . just like in the old days. And I’m a player who used to maintain a year round sub because I play a lot of alts.
Now they parcel out the thin gruel they call “content” in such tiny portions (anyone remember 5 minute weekly quests on BI?) that if you had to rely on them for sustenance you would starve to death.
Today’s devs produce thin, uninteresting content on tiny itty bitty crammed full real estate littered with trashpacks, spread out through artificial time gating over a period of two years (the average expac life). In fact, they can’t even produce actual content, you get fake content instead (mission tables, which are just timers).
VERSUS: the rich, full size areas, full to the brim with so much content that you literally could level three or four toons without repeating much, if any content (for instance during TBC I only took one toon to Netherstorm).
And the best part? After hitting max level, my toons could fly and discover even more to do.
Time-gating the nothing to do being produced in recent xpacs is the opposite of engaging – as empty retail servers clearly show.
When Wow was good, time-gates were almost unused except in dailies, heroics and raids.
I would go back to what worked for almost 10 years before Team “Can’t Do” took over.
Even though you continue to misuse the word engagement…I agree, additional raw content would be fantastic. It’s also not going to happen because it has a development cost and the ROI won’t be there. But you’re going in the right direction.
The silver lining is they are testing out if they can allow flying but gate it in certain questing areas. Using patch 8.3 as a test bed to see if they can do this in shadowlands is something to consider. Personally I think one way or another something big is going to change with PF. Reps and Quests we know are changing and that will impact PF in a major way. Also how previous PF will be treated with the level squish in shadowlands and what level flying will be available all will force changes contrary to those that say the status quo will continue.
There’s no ROI on empty servers. I should think that would be obvious, even to the pinheads at Blizzard these days.
Having more players who love the game brings more players to the game.
All these fools have done in the last five years, is alienate the players they had. One rarely if ever sees new players (except in Classic, of course) and that can’t be good.

Agree on empty servers. They’ve actually paid for themselves many times over but there would be a benefit to shutting some down and merging.
But I think I’m finally getting your gist. You’re whole assumption is people left the game, because of flying and that they would return if it were handed back to everyone.

No. My assumption is that if the devs returned to the former game design of wow (big open areas, lots to do, tons of un-time-gated content AND the ability to level a toon and then use the flying mounts we’ve had since 2007 — more players would remain engaged in the game, period.
Many would level alts, up into the expansions. Many would focus on their mains, doing post-leveling stuff as many of us, myself included, used to do.
The content that is designed for today’s expac is unoriginal and repetitive and has nothing to offer in the way of re-playability. Most of it isn’t even entertaining and some of it isn’t actual content.
PF requires players essentially to do every single activity and cover every single pixel, leaving absolutely nothing for higher level alts to do.
PF replaced content – player flight is the single most popular feature of WoW – with a slog list of boring chores and worse – time gated boring chores.
Honestly, I don’t think these guys/gals have a clue about what made WoW so great in the first place.
Being able to fly at max level was only one of those things. Exceptional content, lots to do, no dictated chore list, but options, options, options – this gave players the freedom to play the content they like on their own time.
Nothing that has happened in this game since 2015 and, specifically, since WoD has been good for it, imho.
That’s why I am playing Classic, with all it’s flaws, it’s 100X the game retail is.

You’re correct about that at least. And wnting more content will never be the wrong desire, it just not a realistic one. Unfortunately.
I quit for 2 years prior but this endless grinding for flying is just too boring. The zones are not “fun” to navigate through, and the quests zones to grind the rep for flying is not fun when every 20 feet you have to fight throngs of mobs. So, haven’t played in two months and waiting for my regret 6 month sub to run out on December 29th.
Been playing since patch 1.06 up until Cata when I quit for 2 years, may be another 2 now. Oh well, game got boring AF with the focus on grinding dailies for achievements for flying.
We all know what this is. It’s a petty move by Blizzard because they are so high on their Horse they feel their content MUST be played rather than optionally enjoyed.
Bad game design, get rid of Ion because hes stupid.
If you don’t enjoy the content, then why play the game?
Yes. They want you to play their game. I don’t think that’s bad considering they do put resources and time into making these expansions.

If you don’t enjoy the content, then why play the game?
Exactly. This is why I don’t buy expansions anymore and only play Classic or old content I liked.
Now however, with the gawd-awful scaling system (boy they even screwed that up) playing old content isn’t fun anymore.
The game has changed materially and frankly, is pretty unrecognizable at this point. If it weren’t called “World of Warcraft” I would swear I was playing some other game.

. And wnting more content will never be the wrong desire, it just not a realistic one.
For instance: here’s a quick fix for mission tables: Instead of them merely being timers…
You select a mission and followers from the MT menu…
Then you and said followers go out into the world and do it.
That would not only be more “immersive” (since the devs love to use that word to describe their vision of a flightless world, filled with flight paths and portals … “immersive”… but I digress…) but it would keep players engaged in the game. And btw that is definitely not a “misuse” of the word.
Fight me.
I still think the core of the game has remained the same.
The game has changed so much because of so many different people wanting so many different things.

I know of no one who wanted redundant choresome content and an expansion for which every conceivable activity is time-gated.
I also know of no one who wanted to wait increasingly longer and longer periods of time to fly. There are those who claim to prefer being grounded, but they’re all liars and each of them not only have all flight abilities, but scads and scads of flying mounts.
NTM anyone can stay on the ground if they prefer.
I don’t prefer using a ground mount but I also have no problem unlocking flying via pathfinder and using my ground mount in the time that it takes to do so.
I really don’t care that it takes a few weeks to grind out something that I was already planning on doing for the sake of just playing the game.
Each to their own.
Eventually flight won’t be unlocked until the last patch of the expac, if at all.

its pretty sad when I can sit here and say that I LOVE the game from level 1 all the way thru level 90…and then like WoDs subscription numbers…my interest nose dives into nearly nothing.
My enjoyment definitely took a hit there.

PF requires players essentially to do every single activity…
…dictated chore list,
And that’s just why.
Then stop playing, game would be better without you people constantly asking for hand outs. And it doesn’t take months, it actually takes less than a month. PF 2 took some ppl a little over a week.
If you’re gonna make an argument, make a valid one.
It’s not a handout if it’s taking away something we already had. That’s part of the problem, the taking away.
And it’s not just about how long it takes, it’s about by the time you get flying, there’s not a ton of content left.

And it doesn’t take months,
Well, technically, it does, because Part 1 and Part(s) X are time-gated. In Legion it was 8 months, this time it’s a year; SL will be 18 months, I shouldn’t be surprised.
BUT. . .
And it’s not how long it takes to do the chore list … it is that players are required to do any given activity at all.
It’s not just flight and the ability to use the flying mounts we’ve had since 2007, for the life of the expansion instead of for a small portion, that was taken away from players –
– It was also the ability to enjoy the game your own way. The option to leave some content undone so an alt might do it and enjoy it fresh. It was the option to select which activities you wanted to do and how you wanted to level.
You SO don’t understand the fundamental problem with Pathfinger. I’ll bet you don’t even realize that it is the entire game now.
