There was a very informative post on Community Council about how Gnomish Battle Chicken Squawk buff is OP and it should be looked at.
Blizzard decided to take the worst option to “fix the problem” and made it a lot more RNG based, removing the “guaranteed” proc.
Unfortunaly, in said post about old engineering items being abused in TBC there was no mention of Steam Tonk Controller, a lvl 55 DMF toy that requires 275 engineering to be made, and aparently no requirements to use.
This item when used by a hunter will instatly dismiss the pet regardless of combat status or the amount of life the pet has, then the hunter will be able to intantly call the pet back safely by their side with FULL LIFE, making the hunter pet basically unkillable and making the “mend pet” skill worthless.
There is a macro that streamline the usage of item, and make it very simple:
/use [nopet] Call Pet
/cast [pet]Steam Tonk Controller
/cancelaura Steam tonk Controller
/use [nopet] Call Pet
Sarthe explains how OP and how much DPS a hunter gain by never having the chance of your pet dying during fights in this video:
I would like to suggest that the devs look at this problem as it seem like a very unintended that a DMF toy would make a pet immortal and boost hunters DPS so much by bypassing damage combat mechanics.

This actually feels like an exploit, to me.

This feels like an “if I can’t have my toy neither can you” to me.

Skipping Dismiss Pet cast, not having to heal your pet, just instantly calling it back at full health by use of an obscure toy for a significant dps gain could certainly be classified as an exploit. If we’re “fixing” things like chicken, actual exploits should be examined.

I dunno. I still feel like OP is a narc and only said something because they nerfed the chicken.

This doesn’t seem like it’s intended.
Hunters on their way to debate the OP…

I for one welcome this, this allows me to save gold for already expensive consumes. Sure our pets will die but when God closes a door, he opens a window.

Steam tonk isnt a dps gain. Its preventing a dps loss. Near perfect user control of a pet could yield similar results, but it is much easier to press a macro.

Good, removal of tonk will separate the good hunters from the bad hunters.

Remove it. It’s clearly an exploit.
This should be removed, seems like an exploit
Hunters already have one of the easiest rotations in the game and you want pet management to be braindead as well?
Remove this exploit
