Took me around 6 hours to get 300 fishing, and that’s with betterfishing where I literally could just press a single button to cast and reel.
How lucky are you that it only took you 2 hours.

Question: I’ve got a fresh 80 with only fishing in TWW. Where is the best pole I can buy without having any rep? am I limited to the junker-starter pole?
And, no it does take longer than 2 hours. I’ve fished for at least 3 hours and am only at 101. I shouldn’t have to purchase extra stuff just to get my fishing skill up so I stop getting junk.
Think about this. If you go fishing IRL, do you actually catch rocks, books, and coins? No, you don’t. This addition isn’t even close to how fishing really works.
It should be changed back to how it was IMO.
have the green algari fishing pole crafted, pretty cheap and decent stats. Dont really need better (ever, really tbh. but it’s perfectly fine until you wanna craft the good one)
engineers make bismuth fisherfriend and tailors make a hat, both cheap
tyty both!! Much appreciated.
two people in this thread have done it in 2-3 hours (i started when the post I quoted had posted and timestamp just said 2h, now it says 3h)
were you only fishing in the starting zone? the different zones have different recommended levels and maybe that alters the skill rate.
You shouldn’t “have to” get more perception and skill to catch more good things? The entire game is built on that. every profession has “stats” since DF, they just added slight complexity to it now.
I’m happy that pools are the way to go. If you noticed, fish are holding much more value than they ever did in the past. Almost all of the gathering professions have transitioned to lower quality returns especially right out the gate.
I’m guessing when people are 300, in full modern fishing gear and consumables, fishing open waters will start to become viable. I wouldn’t mind if it still wasn’t though.
so 6hrs, 3 hours to 101 which would be > 9 hours, those 2 anecdotes alone are wild variance aka dubious.
Someone else said under 3, so lets do another 3.
and lets round me up to 3, that would average to 5.25 each.
I would be absolutely amazed if I got so lucky that I RNGed at around half the expected time . Shrug.
Two out of everyone else is a very low percentage of people who’ve gotten max in 3 hours or less. Hardly a standard you can account for.
And, I’ve fished in multiple locations all over: In land, lower-level areas, higher-level areas, open water, caves, pools inside delves, etc. The only place I haven’t fished yet is in Normal dungeons with actual other people. I did in follower dungeons and every single place I’ve fished, all I catch is junk.
I still do not think this is a good change.
It’s been brought into line with other professions this way – more of a nodal profession than it used to be. Likely to combat fishing bots.
The other way to do it (ie other than node hunting) is, as is being explained in this thread, to max out your perception, rods, and lines, in order to avoid junk fishing with high fishing skill.
Some players will like that, and other players won’t, I think – I’m in the latter category, which is fine, not every system in every expansion has to suit me. I do think this approach will alienate a lot of the more casual fishing community – the hardcore fisher-folk have already adapted it seems.
fish are holding value right now because expac just went live. This will change as we all know. it feels like Blizzard is punishing everyone because some bots fish too.
yet we still have people saying “open waters isn’t viable.” Yawn.
what part of each zone has a recommended skill level aren’t you getting? If you go to azh-kahet you skill up insanely slower than the starting pool next to donogal, you know, as evidenced by you skilling up insanely slower
Yeah, me too more or less. But it apparently works if you max out your perception, rods and lines, and stick to zones within the recommended fishing level. I am not terribly interested in that – fishing was always kind of a relaxing, casual, do anywhere de-stress type of thing for me, and apparently that doesn’t work with this system unless you want to take it more seriously as a profession.
I get that you’re upset. That’s fine. but still two out of the whole thread (and TONS of other reports on other posts, websites, etc.) are reporting the exact same issue.
Regardless, fishing in open water SHOULD allow you to catch fish. Fish live everywhere. Now, catching some junk AND fish should be possible.
Also, since pathfinder is already available. Bots can and will fish pools exclusively. Thus, increasing demand of pools. Bots are fully capable of catching fish from pools only.
(EDIT) And, don’t forget, bots run 24/7; whereas, you can’t.
no, it’s because 6 hours of fishing will yield maybe 50 fish total right now if you do open waters and not pool hop.
as soon as people realize they can’t sit in one spot and get the best fish all the time, it will normalize.
Nobody is being punished because of botters, except botters. Moving to pools always required more attention and yielded way more.
The main diff is that there are fewer fish and a lot of “buffs” if you stand still. the point of the buff timers being short is to keep you moving so you sustain them for better yield, so no more afking at the 1 spot where 3 pools spawn every few minutes and getting the best fish that way
Ah yes the “tons” of people yet you’re claiming to have 100 skill in 3x the time. It’s OK to not know how something works, it’s a bit of a folly to claim it’s broken / bad / whatever.
you have it on good authority from other incorrect people? lolk there are “tons” of guides and youtube videos on how to level fishing and none of them seem to mention open water = zero fish. weird, right?
guarantee people were fishing in zones way above their skill and getting junk “always” (like OP). you literally admitted to that.
be sure to report back in with how fast you level if you fish in the pool in the starting town. the big clue is as you skill up it literally UNLOCKS THE OTHER AREAS in your guide, when you hit high enough skill.
I did the same thing. I fished in Azh-kahet first, got junk, thought “this must be skill capped” looked at the guide and look at that the zones have different recommended skills, with dorn having rec of 1. went to dorn and 2-3 hours later am 300 with all zones unlocked and most of the fish caught
I was about to say the same thing. I just flew around for like an hour and there were pools literally everywhere.
Until other people show up and you get maybe one fish or less, per pool, average.
People who try and fish in your pool are trash
