Admittedly I didn’t play for most of DF, but I’m struggling with all these new currencies/tokens - kej/skull keys/item upgrades/valorstones/and so on. Nothing is intuitive. Even the quest markers on the map that seem important (i.e. upside down purple triangle), which seem to be leading me to exploring these currencies don’t make intuitive sense. Is in not possible to just join a dungeon and get gear anymore? Getting to 80 made sense, but how do I work out what to do now?
More sharing a frustration than anything else. Thanks for your time.

Stone and Crests are used for upgrading level cap gear at 80, run Normals to get outfitted or craft, then run Heroics, then M0s and LFR and upgrade the pieces going forward.
Stones you can get an infinite amount but can only hold 2k max at a time, Crests have a weekly cap that increases every week.

yea, they’re pretty terrible.
Modern blizz seems to have not hired a UI/UX guy for at least 2 xpacs now and it shows.
All you need to know about the crests is you farm them and upgrade when you can. At some point you’ll always have enough valorstones, and will cap out, so don’t worry about those, they’re a rotted currency.
Gear requires 250% more Crests to upgrade in TWW than in DF for uhh, reasons? So try not to think about it too much, just waste 250% more of your time grinding than you didn’t in DF since you didn’t play it lol (smart).

It’s been like this forever, they won’t change it, it’s by design, they want you to farm all those currencies ad infinitum
Yeah the currencies and different systems are out of hand. It’s all to create as much timegating control as possible. Like… I just wanna get my gear to be better. I don’t want to have to do research at every turn to make sure I’m not wasting whatever currency is in question.

You have Crests and Stones, that’s it.
the gear shows the maximum ilvl it can be upgraded to.
There are multiple types of Crests, and multiple breakpoints.
Last tier it was what, everyone was capped on stones, a dead, rotted currency, but at the same time people’s only upgrades were from Aspect gear… but they were blocked by not having enough Wyrms for upgrades. So people had to begrudgingly do lower keys, carry casuals who didn’t seem to be trying, and it felt like a mundane, arbitrary waste of time when the goal was Aspects all along… it was perfectly manufactured timegated bs to draw out subs- there was no benefit to gameplay, and it simply wasn’t fun.
It was ridiculous, and your argument is obviously disingenuous in light of it.
You bootlickers will say the most backwards things to trick/guilt new players into going down the rabbithole of the bs systems and currencies. So much copium for this dying game by design /spit

The system changes even if ever-so slightly every tier, and at some point mid-tier caps come off. If you’re not keeping up with things, you may not realize that as nobody has their currency tab open religiously.
This tier, the crests requirements has gone up by 250% from DF, so more grinding that nobody’s experienced yet because we’re in a content drought. Kinda good to know, don’t you think?
Which is kinda irrelevant since it doesn’t drastically alter the formula of “do increasingly harder content to get higher quality Crests”
That said this conversation was immediately rendered pointless with
You’re just frothing at the mouth wanting to stir stuff up.
Nope, quite the opposite- this xpac has been laughable.

I hired an accountant and even they are having a hard time with it all.

This isn’t just a WoW problem but it is very apparent in WoW ATM because the item upgrade system is a bit obtuse and has what… 4, or 5 currencies by itself? It’s a bit silly IMO. Then you have Keys, and Crystals, and Wax and… I already feel my head spinning.
FFXIV has a similar issue with it’s end game stuff, there are Tokens and Currencies, Crafting and Gathering scripts, Crafted GEAR tokens/Rain/Whatever they name it. Then you add more for the Alliance Raids and it just becomes so convoluted.
Thing is, unless you remove the system, I don’t know of a much better way to fix it honestly. The idea of upgrading gear is a neat one but it is initially confusing as heck to new players.
The way it was explained to me is, you use the Crests to upgrade the slots, and the valor tokens to upgrade the gear, and you get a discount for subsequent items of lower level… or something.
It’s just one of those things that I have to accept that the game has been around for 20 years and some things will just be like this… I dunno. Could be worse.
Thanks all for the explanations. Still doesn’t really make much sense to me, I’ll prob just PvP as Honor and Conquest are more straightforward. Thanks again.
you use Honor and Conquest to buy the gear (and it scales to full in PVP content) but to level it up for PVE content you would still need to use Stones and Crests.
If you just do PVP though then it’s nothing to worry about.

Blizzard design goal: Force players into the wow token’s to level professions.

Currencies in TWW
Artisan Acuity: Same as mettle from last expansion but is only used to buy knowledge/recipes/mats or to be used in crafting rare/epic profession equipment or used in recrafts. Gained from patron orders or gaining knowledge points.
Valorstones: Used to upgrade gear at 80. Earned by doing stuff at 80.
Crests: Used to upgrade higher tiers of gear at 80, or to make crafted gear at higher ilvls. Earned by doing relevant content at 80.
Kej: Earned by doing stuff in spiderland to buy things from spider people.
The crystal things: Forgot what they were even called but they are only used to buy things from renown vendors, takes the place of order/garrison/expedition resources that you earn just by doing stuff.
Keys: Used in bountiful delves for higher tier loot.
Wax: Not a full currency but an item you turn in to kobolds for digging.
Then the PvP currencies are pretty much the same.
Honor: Earned from all PvP, buys lowest level PvP things.
Conquest: Earned from daily wins, weeklies, and rated PvP, buys the highest level PvP things.
Bloody marks/tokens: Earned from WPvP kills, WQs, and weekly, buys mid-level PvP things that have extra effects for WPvP only.
