One of the things I loved the most in FF were the hunts. I’m still waiting for a similar system to get added to WoW.
FF14 has a fatal flaw: paladins can only be tanks.

Big agree. I think WoW has the tightest combat of any MMO out there.
Let’s quickly analyze a few?
-
FFXIV - your attacks are snapshots in time making PvP atrocious
-
ESO - LOL!!! ENJOY THAT ANIMATION CANCELLING
-
Albion Online - Lag is a big factor and zerg v zerg err I mean Guild vs Guild becomes visually indiscernible from splashing 20 different paints on a white canvas
-
New World - decent action combat but the lack of more skills makes it feel very samey
-
SWTOR - good combat but it can at times feel floaty and laggy with micro seconds delay on pressing a button - to - action
-
Runescape - OMG THAT MOVEMENT IS SO BAD WOW JUST ZIG ZAG ME ALL OVER PLS
-
Lost Ark - combat is actually pretty fun albeit spammy…but the rest of the game is trash
-
BDO - another one with nice flashy combat but again spammy af, you can just 1 skill down an entire mob…not much thought into it
-
GW2 - combat is actually pretty good HOWEVER…it does not feel snappy. But this goes back to the whole physics engine of the game and how things move…like if you just tap your W key it’s like your character slides for a little before actually starting the walk animation…you can also literally jump backwards with the jumping forward animation…also things can get VERY spammy in combat and become visual vomit
i don’t like it either so I just play world of worcraft. If they had female undead worlock I would play it for hour but they don’t so blizzard please add undead female worlock to ff14 thank
TBH the lack of ties your character has to their racial background was the big thing I missed in FFXIV. I love being a Blood Elf* (*pretending they’re still a little sick and twisted like they were in TBC. )
That said the lack of Red Mage-style spellblade gameplay in WoW makes me incredibly sad every day of my life.
It’s a different game, for sure, and appeals to a different crowd. However, you may have judged it prematurely. The base game (1-50) is quite boring. However, the story gets incrementally better from there. And, sorry for spoilers, but the people make peace with the dragons eventually, even Estinien.
P.S. You can skip most dialogs. You can hit ESC and there are options to auto-skip ones you’ve seen before in the options.
I think it is more individual than age. I was born in 1959 and I think the art style there is quite nice. Far prettier than wow which is cartoonish though not as cartoonish as Wild Star was. I have never considered wow’s art particularly attractive, the game play is what is fun. I like ESO and LOTRO art styles better too.
As far as story telling, there are several MMOs that do story telling better than WoW does. They include SWTOR, LOTRO, ESO and FF14. The story in WoW is pretty bare bones and it is all about getting to the end game raids.
Later in the game a lot of the anti-dragon stuff changes, but… it’s still a real slog to get that far. I got to the end of the first expac and just had no desire to keep going.
I enjoy the other mmos. Black desert, ffxiv, swtor, gw2, etc etc but I always come back to wow. This last break I took was 6months.
Careful - if you insult GW2 some guy who’s a life-long low tier player in both this and GW2 named Cag-something another will come in and flame you for hours over you not knowing what you’re talking about.
Doesn’t matter if you’re a former world champion, he knows best.
Translation: you didnt play ff14 or gw2. Happy april fools!
you dont know what you’re talking about
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here.
FFXIV doesn’t promote a divisive racially motivated storyline and stands by its storyline. The dungeons and raids are incorporated into the story, but aren’t the focus of it. And they’re used in the group finder as nostalgic encounters instead of the standard for gearing up.
It deviates from what a lot of older MMOs are known for and has an active community team that actually interacts with people and doesn’t hide behind automation to enforce the rules.
I didn’t mind the combat on reaper. Just too many cutscenes for me. Idk maybe I’m too used to wow.
So stunning and brave.
Because they have different taste than you.
It’s a blast until you get to endgame and realize there is absolutely nothing to do except dress your cat girl / pretty boi in a skimpy uniform and pose in Limsa or your guild house. Raiding is equally as boring, you just teleport to bosses kill them and move on, doesn’t feel like a dungeon at all. I think it’s absolute trash too, but I know people love it and more power to them.
Don’t really care for FFXIV that much but I wouldn’t call it bad.
What sets wow above the others is the combat and customization. FF sort of got the combat close but customization isn’t there. And going zone to zone feels like NES Zelda when you went from zone to zone. It keeps it feeling small. I’m sure it helps with optimization but it doesn’t feel great.
Anyways, the state of things doesn’t point to WoW still being “great.” It only highlights the lack of great alternatives. And considering people label every new thing as “wow killer” shows people either want good alternatives or for WoW to stop spiraling out of control.
Because different people like different things, my friend.
