Final Fantasy surpasses WoW for the first time in history

Final Fantasy XIV becomes the most actively played MMORPG in the world, surpassing World of Warcraft this year

FFXIV is now the most actively played MMORPG in the world with nearly 2.5 million active players every day.

It won’t let me post the link. Sorry. It is on the website " Final weapon . net "

To clarify again, actively played refers to players who log on and play FFXIV frequently. This means both free trial players AND subscribed players. Additionally, WoW and WoW Classic numbers are tracked separately.

Something something, numbers aren’t right. Grumble Grumble.

But what about Minesweeper? When you add those numbers in, you can’t argue about that.

That game nearly cost me a job.

If WoW only had 14 people playing, I’d still be here.

As long as they keep fresh servers, maintain servers, or release new content I’ll stay

I played D2 until 2015 long after the 2nd expansion. Blizzard games have that kind of replayability for me.

Sure, it be nice to have 10 million people playing.

Lol, in my 20’s, I would zone out and play that game in the evening hours at my job too.

Heh.

There’s always something like this that people either intentionally ignore and are just way too hyped for WoW to “lose” that they post within 4 seconds of reading the headline somewhere.

FWIW, we can get a (very rough) estimate of how many CHARACTERS are “active” (see: finished the 5.0 story - very loose definition of active) by looking here:

https://ffxivcensus.com/

< 650k characters. And you know people still make alts, even though you don’t have to. I have 3 that have finished the story. This is probably closer to representing subs over there than anything else, assuming the measure of “characters that got this item” is actually accurate. I’m not gonna vouch for it being accurate, since I don’t know what kind of data is publicly available for FFXIV, but it’s something to consider.

It wouldn’t surprise me if FFXIV had more players during patch releases, but it has horrible, horrible retention between them.

Areas turn into a complete ghost town between patches as people only log in to see the content, and ditch out.

All I’m saying is there’s a reason SE only says “x accounts created!”

You seem to be leaving out the part where the site your site references says WoW is still the #1 MMO of all time, with FF14 as #4. (WoW Classic is #5)

It also shows that Shadowlands has seen the highest amount of steady subscribers since the Warlords of Draenor launch.

So cool!

Well to be fair, the content in retail has been fully fleshed out. So, 9.1 will renew some vigor in retail.

And… ?

"It’s difficult to track hidden MMO subscriber numbers, but we do our best!

By combining online social activity, sentiment tracking, public statistics, rankings and more MMO Populations estimates the total subscribers, players and active daily players for the top MMOs. Above is the total number of tracked players by the site. "

That’s Mmo-population’s write up of how it performs its data collection.

Is there a reason why you feel it’s a reliable source?

People don’t realize WoW was still the top mmorpg even during the exodus of WoD but there will be many forum lurkers here to tell you that WoW is still tops. The new game design will most likely ensure WoW is nothing more than a seasonal game in purgatory.
