Feedback: Rider of the Apocalypse Death Knight

Because you ride a horse and use apocalypse

Its not Unholy only, and you dont really ride a horse unless you want some gimmick in content that just doesnt matter.

The entire hero spec revolves around summoning the horsemen and gaining benefits from those horsemen. You arent the rider, you are a conduit for the riders of the apocalypse. Its extremely boring and uninspired. Spend runes, gain horse rider… the end.

You’re incredibly disingenuous. I do think there should be more of a presence of riding the horse rather than outdoors and an active ability. Summoning the horsemen nonetheless is cool, and each being unique is cool.

Please swap this with deathbringer, this makes more sense to blood dk.

No it doesn’t lol

So then Unholy doesn’t get Rider? That just doesn’t make sense for Unholy.

Rider of the Apocalypse looks almost perfect!

Rework DND into an Aura to make it work properly!

No, im not. Thats what the spec is.

Thats subjective. I think its pretty boring.

They each have 1 thing they do and they arent created equal. Them being unique can be a detriment where you want a certain horseman, but its already gone through the rotation so you have to wait for it again, or the RNG isnt in your favor and the time that you need something passes.

Its a jangly keys spec.

While I admire the theme being presented here, there’s a few glaring concerns that stood out to me.

• On a Paler Horse versus Death Charger. This a choice node that is ultimately going to be an annoyance to swap between as instanced content will require Death Charger or it’s an ultimately dead talent. There’s the illusion of choice here. It feels as though On a Paler Horse makes the entire theme of Rider of the Apocalypse. Otherwise, you’re just occasionally a “rider” on a thirty second cooldown. (Haha, Ret Paladins, we got our mobility scooter before you did! Go whine to the Light about it!) I suggest baking On a Paler Horse in to the first capstone passively, then making these two leftmost talents modify it for mobility / support.

• This is for Unholy’s perspective alone. The bloat of pets in this game is something I personally cannot stand. Not only is being around someone that has thirty active pets pretty annoying, but playing and seeing thirty active pets, four mounts all no-clipping through each other, and having to focus below it on “Where is Death and Decay in this mess?” paired with the NPC mob bloat, AoE’s, other class spell effects / pets, etc. It’s a lot. Some people may find this appealing and aesthetically it can be cool, but when you have more than one of these classes/specializations around? It becomes hell.

• Please don’t die on the hill of Death and Decay. This is one of the easiest solutions of an ability that could have been fixed years ago. Make it a personal aura on the Death Knight (looking at you Mograine!) when activated. Also, free up some talents by making the ‘Cleaving Strikes’ talent baked in to it. It feels pretty bad to be shoveled the illusion of choice in our talents. Nobody is debating and crunching numbers if we need ‘Death Strike’ or not, for example. There’s no option. I feel the specializations of Unholy and Frost both need a rework still to address issues.

• Mograine, Whitemane, Trollbane, and Nazgrim. First of all, why lore characters? Feels a bit off. Not my cup of tea. The RNG flavor of this has me feeling a bit worried. Here’s to those fun moments where you are doing single target and Mograine comes out with his Death and Decay (or, even possibly breaking CC, which is frightening.) I personally feel more agency should be in the hands of players when ‘spawning an NPC that does X ability for Y scenario!’

• Nodes such as Mograine’s Might are filler. It’s not doing anything but slapping this repeated focus around Death and Decay that I really don’t see much excitement in. This should be baked in to Mograine in general.

• Horseman’s Aid is just the former Spellwarden PvP talent. It’s strange seeing future talents being that which you stripped from the game because of innate imbalance/power from the past. It doesn’t bode well to be a lasting defensive choice when the implication is an inevitable nerf again in other content.

• I’m not partial on getting four new pets that then need respective talents to modify them, as opposed to modifying my existing playstyle. That’s just my personal view.

I could go on with other things and focus at nitpicking, but I feel these stood out to me the most. Otherwise, love the idea of mounted combat–just I wish it was actually the truth and not a veiled ‘chance’ and in any instanced combat suddenly you’re the ‘Auto-Walker of the Apocalypse’.

How can we ban Kelliste from posting on the forums? This person never provides any dialogue and gripes about everything. Hes here mentioning religion and all this unneccsary banter

On a pale horse should work in dungeons/bgs, but as purely cosmetic. Maybe even at least a 5-10% movement speed increase. Also being able to pick out our mounts would be great.

How fragile can you be to be scared of opposing opinions and think “lets BAN THEM”.

I provide plenty.

Only bad ideas.

Yeah… im just talking about religion for absolutely no reason. Blizzard came up with the ideas for the 4 horsemen all on their own. What was I thinking to look at where they got the idea from, War, Famine, Conquest and Death, the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse from the bible. So to understand their direction you should look at the origin of the idea. So… how exactly is the player DK a rider of the apocalypse when the 4 horsemen, the riders of the apocalypse, are all represented. Whitemane is famine though she rides the pale horse which is actually death in the origin lore, Nazgrim is Conquest, War is probably Trollbane, and Death is Mograine.

So what is the player in terms of being a Rider of the Apocalypse? Everything is represented. What they should have done is make a 5th rider and you are that, but thats not what they did, they basically created Harbinger, a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another.

You arent one of the horsemen with this spec, it should be called Harbinger because you are signaling the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Its the absolute worst DK spec in terms of hitting the mark of what the name says you should be fulfilling and what you are actually doing.

The only reason why its called Rider of the Apocalypse is because jangly key horsies that people are drooling over not recognizing you arent a rider. Its a boring bland spec that is going to wear off in terms of gameplay 2 days into the beta.

Overall, RotA seems extremely cool and fun to play. I do however have a few concerns.

The bigger concern relates to “abstract” tuning: in patch 10.2 Unholy DK recieved some very targetted nerfs to reduce the huge spikes in damage that Gargoyle + Army could create. Having Apocalype Now trigger during Army seems to be working strongly in opposition to those nerfs. I would like to see the relative balance of Army maintained as it is, so I wonder if there is a way that the four horsemen could trigger instead when army is fading or over.

Secondly, and a more minor concern, I hope the Horsemen look cool, but are visually distinct enough to not confuse the horsemen and the actual DK. I am also generally concerned about more pets (particularly those with larger models) being added. My guild (which regularly has at least 2 BM hunters and 2 DKs) already runs into occasional issues where the massive piles of pets can obscure ground effects on some boss fights.

Otherwise, great tree. Definitely going to play some DK in TWW

Another point I want to bring up regarding On a Pale Horse & Death Charge, look into iterating the melee attacks while mounted. Certain animations that causes our characters to spin dont mesh well when mounted.

Raid leader: “What do you play?”
Me: “Undead deathknight, rider of the apocalypse” I told him with a straight face.

The fact that Frost doesn’t need DnD and yet they keep shoving it down our throats.
