[EXPLOIT]? Onyxia

There is a post on reddit that caught my eye and I wanted to see what you guys thought about it.

“For those who didn’t understand what this is and how broken it is:

Onyxia is a pretty easy boss especially at the end, there’s a reason why it was 4manned in late vanilla. The tactic is that you get onyxia to about 1-2 %, then everyone but a designated group of people goes infront of onyxia and gets oneshot by breath, then leaves the group. This way only a handful actually gets saved to onyxia, good groups I’ve heard can get like 6-8 kills of onyxia per reset this way.

Why would you need to do this? Onyxia has AMAZING loot. Deathbringer is BiS weapon for all nonhuman warriors, viskag is amazing for sword rogue and human warrior. The tier is great, you can get full onyxia head turnin from all your melees/hunter in like 4 resets instead of 20(10 if doing splits), and you also just get decent gold from doing it, bags and the onyxia loot is great. Especially before lionheart helmet recipe has dropped (it’s like 1-3%-ish from only onyxia rag and worldbosses that aren’t out)

There was a lot of drama about this when people first discovered it. They actually talked with a vanilla dev who confirmed it was blizzlike and thus it’s allowed on ND but very few do it, so maybe we’ll see it in classic as well. I sure hope not because it’s lame and clearly a “bug”

Similarly another unintended exploit used by a few guilds on pserver is that the trash after vaelstraz respawns if not completley cleared. So what raids would do is sleep 1 of the aoe boys, kill and loot the rest then run in and out to reset it. Here’s a list of the items you basically fill every player in your guild with after doing this for a couple of hours:

cloak-of-draconic-might
boots-of-pure-thought Yup BiS healer boots”

In my opinion its an exploit but do you guys feel it should get fixed? It would severely undermine the integrity of content in vanilla.

This is a private server meme and will most likely not be doable in classic as it is an abuse of game mechanics

Yea if this was really even in Vanilla I would think it was fixed before 1.12 so no need to even worry.

Onyxia and MC were the only raids out on release so I doubt something like that survived unchaged in the game from literally day one.

Blizzard likes it when people explain how to do exploits on the forums.

Yes, because i want it fixed. Id hate for something like this to get overlooked.

Is your only source Pservers?

Because we all know blizz uses a PS as the reference client right?

Do you have access to the reference client? If so please, help us out. Id check to make sure if that were the case.

hahah so now it’s on me to disprove your so called prove of nothing?

Yup, this thread is about normal on these forums. Can’t go a few days without people getting their undies in a bind over something.

Hopefully things will normalize come launch.

If you literally read the first line, youd notice that this is initially not my post but rather something i found: you can disprove yourself for all i care.

I found that the earth is flat…

I like how people on private servers discover “cascading” in 2019 and think it’s some new secret tactic.

Several guilds used it and abused it hard on stormreaver in 2005, and a handful of guilds were temp banned for it with loot removed. The method was fixed sometime during the summer.

edit: I have no idea what I’m talking about. Re-read the OP and that wasn’t was cascading was. Don’t know if what OP is actually works.

Cascading allowed for people to do full clears of MC/BWL/etc every day of the week provided there were enough alts/guilds willing to coordinate:

Hence asking about it. Clearly my intention but some people are a little preoccupied verifying their compensated existence.

Also - thank you

Seems to not be an exploit then.

They still can do it. Most modern world-first guilds require their players to maintain 2-4 characters so that their “main” can get loot competing with 5-10 others in a 25 man raid with alts making up the rest of the ranks.

I’d want to see that conversation and which “dev” they talked to.

Give me a few minutes. It was on the Reddit thread for this topic.

EDIT*

Here is the twitter thread with John Staats (original level designer) and Alexander Brazie.

Cascading worked when raid ids reset every 5 days from boss kill.

Guild would start their raid ID, kill first boss to start lockout timer of 5 days. Then another guild would clear as far as they can (or alts), as long as they started it a day after you. Your ID expires on day 5, and the other guild has 1 day left on theirs. You join theirs, get the 1 day left ID, clear the raid, and then yours expires. If you set it up with enough guilds, you can keep doing this as much as you want to play.

It’s why we went to a 7 day raid lockout

This basically means if a player has affected Onyxia in some manner, only Hearthing would prevent you from getting saved. No Idea if warlock summoning outside of raid will work.

Correct and it was followed by a vacation and loss of loot.

And you’re correct it was abused, every one knew about it.

You mean why we went to fixed reset dates?

Either way, fair enough. We haven’t seen raids to see whether they’ve changed things, but I suspect we’ll get the fixed resets, even if Onyxia is a 5 day cycle with a changing date that it resets. Though more likely they’ll go with 7 day fixed cycles around maintenance, because of exploits.
