Trying to explain Shards to more casual guildies this evening, went something like this:
There’s going to be new gems called shards
There’s 3 different types of shards and they come in 3 different colors
In mythics you will need 3 dps shards
In raids you will need 3 dps shards + 2 more shards so you can have 3 of one color
(guildies counting on fingers)
This probably means you will have 2 sets of gear for pve, because your M+14 gear will be better than an inactive color bonus but not better than an active dps shard
(guildies frown)
Don’t upgrade your current lego
You’re going to have to throw your current legendary in the trash and remake the exact same one because there’s a 95% chance your lego is in one of your 5 shard slots
(what? is there a free conversion? why not)
You’ll all need chest, shoulders and helm, but the other 2 pieces are random depending on your armor type
You won’t actually benefit from your shard set bonus for a very long while if you don’t get exactly the right socketed piece, because you need to socket red in a chest to active the blood bonus, or green in a helm to activate the unholy bonus, or blue in shoulders to activate the frost bonus, and you can only get these items from raids.
(painful groans)
The descriptive “more” was an important thing you deliberately missed from your quote.
Also, just because they are casual does not mean they would not want to know what the new systems are, regardless of whether it will directly impact them in the long term.
This… this is exactly why I have decided that once 9.1 goes live, I am going to do each new instance exactly one time to see it for myself and that’s it. No more grindy hamster wheels for me. From now on, if I don’t enjoy it, I don’t do it.
Yes, I will fall incredibly behind the curve on gear. So be it. There are too many activities in the game that I actually WANT to do that do not require high ilvls to do and I am tired of wasting my precious gaming time doing crap that I don’t enjoy.
This will cause people to quit actually. Who in the right mind is going to refarm mats and gold to get the exact same legendary but with slots. Unless they do a refund on mats and gold.
I thought “more” meant they were explaining it to more people. I’m not sure I even understand what “more casual players” would mean, then.
And I think you missed my point. From the second quote, I was simply saying that I don’t see casual as someone who would run around with two sets of gear and be running +14s.
It’s me saying that’s not how I, personally, see a casual player. I’m not sure why you’re being negative towards what I said.
Luckily with the next expansion all this will go away and we’ll get a new assortment of systems you can try out and like/dislike. So if you feel behind, it’ll only be for a year or so.
No doubt you’re correct. Again, for me, my priority in the game is fun. Gear grinds are not fun for me. Therefore I will not do them. I accept that this will handicap me, but only in terms of in-game activities that I won’t be doing anyway so it’s all good.
Many would likely argue a true casual probably isn’t going to take the game so uber serious and thus it is sufficient to say that there will be new gear that has special gem slots and special gems that get stronger the more raids you do.
All the other nonsense about swapping legendary slots and needing multiple gear sets to juggle around in niche situations to be optimal is largely the realm of tryhards. That’s fine if they want to go through that kind of effort for whatever few % increases it’ll net (if that) but most people aren’t playing anywhere near that level
Just to ease some problems, if you aren’t trying to min/max initially, I would just focus on getting 3 dom sockets.
If it goes over your legendary don’t use it for the time being and try to get 3 in other slots. Ease your guildies into the 5 set bonus thing just by doing the raid, cross the bridge of replacing the legendary when it comes but I do not think for a casual guild the set bonus will be necessary at all initially.
The system certainly sucks that you can’t just socket your leggo with dom sockets, but don’t overwhelm yourself or your guildies. Take it slow and just focus on downing the bosses as you go
More as in “more casual than I.” We’re a heroic guild and some people get a weekly +10, 12 or 14 in depending on their interest / ability, a few have KSM, but others are more interested in just raiding and having fun. Totally agree that 14’s may sound casual to some and daunting to others.
well written. its just terrible why go thru all that could of just brought straight tier back boom get the piece done. and the price of legendaries will be pretty high again oh boy i wasted 500k on my head piece and whatever else it was on my 5 other toons. people in the sham discord were laughing it ain’t much gold i was like sure you 4 sell runs but to normal wow players it’s a ton. i honestly ain’t made my mind up if i’m gonna raid again or not if i decide not to i’m just quitting retail and finishing off my toons in tbc time thats done shadowlands should be over.
