Evoker's limited range: Megathread

My own thoughts (pertaining to both specs):

Nobody likes struggling for LoS or standing in the melee to do damage as a caster or healer. The class needs the standard 40. It feels like a nerf to WoW’s gameplay, nothing “hero class” about it!

Can’t wait for them to realize this won’t work in Raids or BGs. There is no “mid range” in end game content, that’s called dying to AOEs. This is a particularly huge problem in raids where ranged and melee stick together.

Encounters would have to be designed to accommodate the change, especially given you have to root yourself to empower or disintegrate, and hover doesn’t change that.

What do my fellow Lizards think?

Anything different is bad, all classes must have no definable strengths or weaknesses in my roleplaying game.

I mean in the interview they said if “mid range” doesn’t work they’ll just swap them back. You can’t have ONE class stacking in a new position and design encounters around it without bending over backwards and wasting dev time.

He said, having no experience designing enemy, dungeon, or raid encounters. “You just CAN’T do it!” He said, citing no examples. “It’s just a waste of dev time!” says random poster who has literally no idea how development time is spent internally or how many development teams there even are.

The devs said they may very well change it. Go read the interview summary on MMOC.

“Exploring a new mid-range niche is part of the Evoker’s unique role. If it is too much of an issue they might increase it, but having a shorter range is part of the fantasy of being a dragon in the thick of the fight.”

I honestly don’t think it’s a problem in dungeons. But it’s a massive issue in raids because of how range and melee groups are stacked together. You’d have to change your raid positioning just for the sake of the evoker, and they don’t bring anything particularly special that makes it worth doing so.

It is going to struggle to get a competitive spot over other classes because of it.

We have the range penalty, but not a benefit for it:

  • We could cast everything on the move, making us the most mobile caster.
  • We could have a lot of damage reduction, making us the most tanky caster.
  • We could have a big damage tuning, making us the highest DPS caster.

Anything could work, sacrificing range for a benefit, but instead we got all of the flaws with none of the buffs.

I’m nothing more than a casual player but I absolutely hate it. I don’t even play ranged often but it feels terrible always being out of range when I’m in a decent position

I think they can work it out. As a healer, I dont mind having fire breathes and dream breathes to 25 yards, which is just logical. However, when talking about spells where you going to fly (Rescue, Verdant embrace) I think they would be more loglical at 40 yards or even 50, just like dream flight and deep breath.
As for the single target bronze heals, its ok at 30, but could be 35 maybe.
As dps i can see issue mostly in pvp I think. But I think its the same, they should give combination of a diversity of spells between 25 and 50 yards. like Aoe spells 25 yards, but single target 40 yards? i dont know

It’d be better if most of your spells didn’t root you in place. Hover definitely helps, but I honestly just think disintegrate and living flame should be castable while moving. Would it fix the problem? Probably not, but it’s really the worst of both worlds. Being rooted in non hunter range classes, and being too close to the action for melee, who can mostly free move and still attack. Plus it’s so easy to move the mobs out of range, cancelling your cast. Maybe Hover can be used like feint, or blur or something, a short defensive cooldown for aoe.

Not only that but since the damned bosses hop around like fleas on a griddle good luck trying to follow them while you’re waiting for your hour long cast on empowered spells. Limiting us to melee range would be a disaster IMHO.

Feels great honestly. Yes sometimes im out of range as the tank is kiting the adds but these is a double edge sword to it. Mid range is rough unless you know mechanics / pick up on them easy. Also our aoe burst can easily make up for this if you know your priority casts. Im loving this build doing 20k overall in a mythic at 268 ilvl

This amount of damage does not scale into 70 :frowning: if it did I’d have warmode on in beta right now. lol

Taking the time and learning the class is skill not trolling. Its not even hard

Keep the range limit.

Let Evoker cast everything but empower spells while moving.

Make Hover allow empower while moving as well as break root/snare.

idk why that is so hard to do. Make them the most mobile. Mid range caster.
