…in that they had a process where one could dye their armor by making or purchasing vials. Why can’t we have the option to dye our armor? I mean, if lowly EQ was able to have this feature as far back as their PoP expansion (pre-WoW), I don’t see why Blizz wouldn’t add this feature.
Because that’s not how armor is created in this game.
From an EU post:
Already replied at Blizzcon Q&A iirc. WoW Gear isn’t dyed since BC and is more or less painted on the armor with a mix of colors.
I don’t think dye will be an option for WoW due to Devs just doing 1 set and 4-5 colors for each difficulty + pvp…Its easier that creating more sets.
Exactly, its different how they designed the game, however; this could be fixed by doing armor of 10-20 colors and allow the player to pick the dye…meanwhile in the background you’re changing it to be another armor with same values, something similar to the Mechano-cat mount that has dye options.
spaghetti code cant handle strain.
EQ also had like 4 armor models, with maybe 5 different robe graphics.
For mail, plate and leather the only difference between any armor in the game WAS color.
What does the length/complexity of the code have to do with the way art assets are layered?
its been linked to other things before. i put allot of blame on it when the features people ask for dont get put into the game.
wasnt that the cause of the main bag being unremovable?
the fact that they’d have to go through all of their assets and create new assets of each dye color. This would be a huge undertaking and would take those resources (people/time/money)…
Could it be done sure, but for the Roi it wouldn’t make any sense
The gear is in this game is even more crappy.
Because it sounds fun.
And even if they did, instead of letting you just buy the dyes and apply it, they’d make you have to visit a specific NPC to do the dyes, need so many of that dye color to apply the color and have the more “rare” colors have abysmal drop rates and only gotten from PvP, or every Dungeons/Raid except LFR.
iirc they tried to do it in TBC but they couldn’t get the colors to work quite right, that’s why a lot of TBC sets have kinda garish colors.
Maybe they’ll try again eventually - especially with their greater emphasis on character customization the last few expansions - but I think transmog was kinda their alternative to dyable armor.
A lot of modern games have both systems of course.
I am sure an AI could get it worked out for them.
it probably could, at least as far as colors go. My guess is that if it ever does happen though only new armor would be dyeable.
I’m guessing a lot of backend tweaking would be required to get the textures to work properly, and we already have lots of seams and stuff in the older sets, I’d worry we’d see even more graphical glitches with armor.
Yeah, I agree!
they had clerics, druids, enchanters, bards, rangers, rogues, necromancers, warriors, magicians, wizards, paladins, beserkers and shadowknights. every class had race and gender specific armor, so ranger armor on a half elf was different than ranger armor on a wood elf or human and they didnt share the same design between genders either, so ranger armor on a wood elf male was different than ranger armor on a wood elf female, etc. and every expac introduced even more race/class/gender specific armor. it grew exponentially, and this all pre-dated wow. lol
Ah yes. Each race had one (1) model of each type.
Half Elf Chainmail.
Half Elf Plate
Half Elf Leather
It din’t “grow exponentially from there”. There were no new armor models added until Scars of Velious, the second expansion. Which added one new armor graphic for each.
Half Elf Velious Chain Mail
Half Elf Velious Plate
Half Elf Velious Leather.
Bringing up the armor graphics available to your character from 1 of each type to 2. Classic WoW launched with far more armor models just for grey - green quality gear, forget about epic dungeon sets. By the time Wrath hit (WoW’s second expansion) there were hundreds of armor models in the game.
In fairness, EQ dyeable armor didn’t come out until Luclin… Even then the system sucked for another 5 years before it was workable.
The luclin armor dye system also didn’t actually dye the armor, but dyed a transparent layer above the armor. I.E. when you died and went off naked on a corpse run, your body and underpants were also dyed.
my high elf enchanter had her emerald green starting robe. then a robe she could quest for that had +1 to int. and a robe she could buy that increased her charisma. and another robe that increased it even more etc, to the tune of like 20 different non raiding robes. she could also buy class armor made by a tailor or make it herself. we havent gotten to robes from raids, which were varied. by the time you could dye armor, there were maaaany raids and 100s of robes.
same for all the classes
Can’t fathom how we don’t have this.It obviously would of been either a Alchemy or Inscription craft or if this was added in Dragonflight a combo craft like so many other things. They could go back and add dye’s to raids dungeons linked to achievements and feats of strength. Say for example the Legendary Warglaives. You can get a nice Fel Dye that has the similar glow to the weapons I could go on and on. This if anything needs to become reality in WoW they already steal ideas chop them into pieces reassemble them into their version and add it to the game so they should have no qualms doing it now.
Would love to hear people thoughts or ideas for other Dyes et.
