ive been thinking about this for a while and i may be alone on this but i remember back in the day when getting a purple item meant something. why is it that epic gear is now just given out like welfare in this game now. why even have green and blue items at this point. it means nothing. i think the game would feel a whole lot more rewarding if epic gear was only obtainable in raids and conquest gear pvp. everything else should be blue or green like back in the day. thats just my opinion. gives you something to actually work for rather than knowing no matter what youll have full epic gear once you hit max level. i dunno thats my rant. lol

One of the least discussed downfalls of WoW’s overall appeal is gear value.

There was a time, your BiS would last you months, if not longer in an expansion. When WoW switched to gear being disposable and replaceable (Diablo style), I really do think that led to some players moving on to other games. That was a key element to the RPG aspect, your toon’s (personal) quest to get a certain gear upgrade and have it be meaningful and lasting.

Gear is only as meaningful or meaningless as you make it. That said, if your ego is dependent on what color the text on your gear is, maybe you need to take a break from the game and reassess some things in your life.

And in that time, players became bored and complained about the lack of content. Now they push patches faster than they can finish them.

Also, every patch that came with a new raid killed your BIS gear. How good was that MC gear after Nax came out? Yup, it’s been this way from the beginning…

I think it’s not the gear, it’s just that there’s no Stormwind square or Orgrimmar valley to show it off at, figuratively speaking. Everything is sharded and there’s no feeling of being a “local hero” so to speak. You’re placed together with folks from populated realms and nobody cares.

That’s why I think a lot of side progression is not popular in retail. Because community aspect doesn’t matter and it’s a lot more fun to just concentrate on personal numbers.

And also I think why gear feels unimportant is because the game is old and the portion of experienced players that hit BiS is much higher. A lot of people do max mythics and everybody just sort of sits at the top of gear progression, so reaching that level is nothing special and being below that level feels uneventful.

I’ve been thinking about people who care about the text color of other people’s gear, who base their own self-worth on having purple text on their tooltips while others don’t. I think they are in the minority. But clearly people like you are being pandered to, if your meme is that “I’m the only one in the game who deserves epic gear.” Odd that you posted on a level 63, who wouldn’t deserve epic gear.

It would be better to have fewer rewards, but more meaningful rewards when obtained. Having too many progression paths just dilutes the value of each individual path and everything gets reduced to: the path of least resistance.

and the skullflame shield was from mobs and in dungeons
