And i put a shield on for boss fights that are somewhat difficult
I also think you are over exaggerating the amount of damage mitigation equipping just a shield does when you are not specced in it. Yes it does reduce damage… but honestly not by as much as you seem to think it does. Especially when you cant build rage to hold aggro with 0 AoE abilities and have to tab+sunder every enemy on the pull. 2hander tanking allows dps to start nuking earlier without pulling aggro off of me. Like i said. I do it. It works all the time on these leveling dungeons anyway
May be a good time for you with your weapon and gear, I dont know what to tell you, but assuming you are going to float by until 60, I am just glad you are not on my realm. We have enough cocky warriors as it is.
Lol i did this to 60 my first play through 15 years ago and it worked then. I am not concerned
Sounds like you’re unaware that battle shout is one of your best aoe threat abilities?
Totally cool, and I am not trying to bash you… plenty of warriors who are good at tanking can do it.
There are plenty who cant, though. They can barely handle tanking, period, let alone with a 2H or DW.
TBH ive tried that. Didn’t seem to do much against trigger happy mages lol.
No it definitely doesn’t overcome a mage if they launch into aoe right when you pull, but it is still effective.
So we can agree that the 2hander is not the problem. Its the player then? I was in a group as dps with another warrior tanking. I had to tell him to use sunder cause I was holding aggro whole time instead. He said " I use heroic strike instead cause it only costs 12 rage" Sorry not a weapon issue lol
I will test it some more. Thanks
Yes, it is most definitely a player issue. But the problem is that everyone heard about this new method of tanking thanks to streamers, and now every try-hard fanboy thinks they can 2H tank while leveling and DW raid later… and SOOO MANY PEOPLE have generally accepted 2H Warriors tanking, although SOOO MANY of them are outright horrible tanks, and it doesnt get any better without a sheild for them.
All decent players have put a warning label next to this method. It is not necessarily PUG friendly if you dont know exactly what you are doing, and sadly, many dont.
We have a mix of people who want to take it slow and enjoy, and the crowd that wants to MIN/MAX. This clashes in PUGs. You take more damage upfront without a sheild, making your health drop at a faster rate, even if overall healing is minimized. This frantic type of keep your health up for certain pulls is deadly when the DPS are not playing along and a clothie DOES end up pulling aggro, maybe not from you but from a less experienced tank. The situation can go from very comfortable to borderline wipe rather quickly, and most players are not very good at reacting to unforeseeable/spontaneous challenges… that is why the mage tower was so hated in Legion and why certain bosses were always a sure wipe in LFR…
I think its fine to tank as 2H dps, if the healer can keep you up, and either (a) isn’t consistently OOM, or (b) is OK with you causing that kind of continuous drain on resources. It does cost more mana to heal a 2H tank (or DW), and some people handle that stress differently than others. Stressing the healer’s resources every pull just means if somehow a pull goes awry (runner, etc.), and you get more mobs, there will be fewer resources left to deal with an unintended situation.
That said, it should be a dialogue for both parties, not simply the Tank’s decree or Healer’s decree.
Tanking in general isn’t “PUG Friendly”. I would be willing to bet that most of these tanks would not do much (if any) better regardless of what weapon they are using.
Don’t get me wrong. Once I start doing dungeons like BRD, LBRS, UBRS, Strat etc… i am gonna put on a shield, but for now it just seems unnecessary and actually more of a chore for me to hold aggro with at this point.
Some of the best runs I have had were with 2H tanks =)
And some of the worst runs I have had were with 2H tanks =)
You are absolutely correct that it probably doesnt matter what weapon they have, but at least they wont die as quick and I have more mana to carry the group through a wipe scenario when the bad tanks admit they are not the best tanks and board up… but people never believe they are the bad ones.
A huge problem is bringing tanks that are too low level for the dungeon. When last boss is 5 levels higher than tank, most skills get resisted or miss and tank takes crushing blows constantly and cant build rage because he cant land a hit.
Tanks should not be your first MMO character lol.
Had a 2H Warrior try to tank PRINCESS at level 46 yesterday. He laughed at me when I complained
Ya princess is annoying asf…ill run a shield on that one.
That’s a MASSIVE strawman. If mages act like idiots, then the warrior isn’t going to hold aggro. Simple. And in that case, it’s not the warrior’s fault. But that’s not what we’re talking about here. Here, we’re talking about the dopes who insist on 2H/DW tanking while (A) not being geared for it and (B) not being any good at it. That makes up the vast majority of the vocal minority in this thread who are trying to advocate for the nonsense.
