Enable RealID for the Forums Please

How about no?

I don’t use my real name to random internet weirdos who I don’t know.

Even my Facebook has fake name.

Real names are only for people who know me in real life.

RealID would be a disaster, the forums would be deserted. Some of the people on this forum would be a real life risk to others, the satanists, the homophobes, the transphobes, the trumpers, the far right extremists etc. Part of the appeal of playing a fantasy game is getting to be someone else.

I’ve been saying this for years.

It would be great to weed out the trolls, drama-llamas and attention seekers and clear way for legitimate mature discussions.

Edit: lol at all the people outing themselves when saying “I dOnT gIvE oUt My rEaL NaMe!”

All it will do is make trolling a privileged activity
If you can afford to make a dummy account just for trolling then congrats, you get to troll.

Real ID would mean that your legal first name would be displayed. Trolls would immediately get doxxed, and so on

Not acceptable.

A positive step forward would be cracking down in bad faith troll threads and posters that post them. Posters like you and your alts whose names also start with t.

They aren’t. A few years ago yep, certainly not the case anymore.

You’re obviously new here.

And you clearly haven’t thought this through. But that’s ok because others have…

Blizzard planed to do this about a decade ago, and one of the Devs (or an executive, can’t remember specifics) who was pushing for it and telling everyone how safe it would be, was doxxed thus proving instantly that what they were claiming was a giant lie.

So, nope. Terrible idea. Especially because most day jobs don’t provide enough disposable income for most forum posters to pay for private security in case a forum post triggers someone enough to attempt any in-person… visit.

Why does a dedicated “forum main” (like what you’re seeing on my avatar right now) look “sus” or rather …

… how exactly are character levels and/or high achievement points an indicator of comments being “worthwile” your time? As a matter of fact, those numbers have zero impact on the overall value of any comment or the validity of someone voicing their opinion. The person you’re questioning there would be just as “sus” and -depending on your current opinion - just as “obnoxious” / “annoying” / “trollish” as you now consider them to be even if their avatar had 10k+ achievement points and were level 60.

Not quite: Even with an “ingame main” (however one wants to define a character as such) there are (ingame) character settings that will lead to a particular character only showing those points that actually were accumulated on that particular character.
=> Whatever number you’re seeing on my forum avatar right now: you still can’t know if I do happen to have another character on the exact same BNet account within the exact same WoW license with a higher number of achievement points.

Which would pose even more of a problem than what people think it would solve.

The alternative of BattleTags isn’t that much better either. The actually “best” solution would be to have a singular dedicated forum avatar that for third parties (i.e. “you” as a forum reader) by default is completely separated from any ingame information and where the individual user has to actively link particular characters and their stats should they feel the need to communicate that particular information. Whether or not said dedicated forum avatar should provide the ability to change the name and how such a change should be reflected within the forum is a seperate discussion.

Btw. neither RealID nor BattleTag would change anything with regards to your comment that malevolent users can create “burner” BattleNet accounts with “burner” identities.

“You” in turn should try to evaluate postings exclusively based on the merrits of their content and not based on the merrits of having a higher level and/or large achievement points.

Pass. I like my privacy and the legislation that protects it.

Hi Ben, i am Cranjis. Cranjis McBasketball. Unbelievably gigantic cow.

The were going to try that once and it didn’t go well.

On July 6, 2010, Blizzard announced their intention to have Real ID names visible when posting on the official forums.[1] This resulted in a massive outcry against the idea, based primarily on concerns about privacy issues and potential harassment. Due to the flood of criticism, Blizzard rescinded their plan three days later.

Worse than that, they tried real ID at one point and the dev who came up with it got actual IRL death threats and the like… so they VERY quickly realized how bad an idea that was from first hand experience…

Use Battle Tag not RealID. One per account, no personal information. Easy.

You didn’t read the rest of my posts did you?

Big no to real ID.

Lock people to one character to post on

if i remember right it was actually one of the forum CMs, i can’t remember his name off hand. i want to say he actually posted his personal info just to prove “see i did it, it’s not that bad” and then he got a ton of pizzas sent to his house, got doxxed, etc

It now seems that upset users have started taking it out on Blizzard employees. It all started with a company worker who in order to alleviate people’s concerns, took the decision to reveal his full name in the official announcement. The gamers immediately started digging up information about him, such as address, phone number, facebook account and other details, some of which eventually proved inaccurate.

i’m like 90% sure it was a forum CM

One of the biggest groups against this was the LGBTQ+ community, which the OP pretends to speak for. Op has proven themselves to be a Troll. Congrats, you played yourself.

You are correct… It was Bashiok who put his real name out.
