does this mean we wont be having blizzcon?
Wild guess : 25, lives at home, social studies degree, part time barista job as work experience.
It’s okay, you can grab my quote without context to pretend that that’s anything like what I said.
Close enough.
Correct.
Actually, welding certifications/experience and ranch hand experience since it’s a property I actively live on and work on, including maintaining various animals.
It’s okay. Sometimes the people advocating for improved and expanded WFH policies/protections aren’t actually the people who would benefit from those things. The work I do, I’m never going to get the option to work from home unless I’m self-employed doing projects people drop off, which I also do from time to time.
(A note for people living rurally on the note of animals- Guinea hens/guineafowl are an absolute godsend during heavy bug seasons.)
People can cite all of the research that leans toward WFH driving productivity up but at the end of the day nobody has any proof that Activision/Blizzard saw those same results in their workers or that those results stayed consistent without hitting diminishing returns.
Bottom line being: you don’t know what this decision means for Blizzard products. It’s all assumptions based on people’s priors.
Do you realize that the majority of people that you’ve been talking about work on salary? We can work 8 hours one day and 15 the next for the exact same pay.
Problem is that its not black and white. There’s upsides and downsides to WFH.
I think the hybrid approach is probably the best.
Just sick and tired of all the screeching about it. People complaining about this have no clue how easy they have it if actually having to show up at their workplace is the biggest threat to their way of life.
…and if they wont work…someone else will.
got to pay those bills somehow
employers know this.
Amongst the big companies. There’s still plenty to be found amongst smaller companies.
Heck, I don’t even work for a tech company, I work on the intra-company applications for a non-profit company that does research/development for the US government.
If Blizzard was looking at numbers showing they were getting better results with work from home they’d probably go, great, less facilities overhead.
Not, lets get less work from working at the office, pay more in facility costs, and anger our employees.
So whatever the reason it doesn’t work could be, it’s pretty a safe assumption they’re looking at data that shows it doesn’t.
Oh no. They lost two weeks of contributions. How ever will they manage to catch up? They will have to scrimp and save for the rest of their working life to stay on track. /s
They might be looking at data, they might not be. Middle and upper management are strange creatures. Also, there is absolutely no guarantee they’re interpreting the data correctly. Like I said, strange creatures.
There’s solutions to this. Develop skills that make you harder to replace. Invest in yourself.
If you feel your current employer undervalues you, jump to the next.
You feel loyalty doesn’t work? Become a mercenary.
But again, that’s hard. It requires you to go above and beyond your 9-5 robot routine.
You don’t get 401k benefits at most places till 90 days
Some businesses will take away their contributions if you leave/get fired before , 5 years
Majority of them? Yeah, no, they have no idea. I agree with that assessment, especially given the work I do. I’d take having to drive to work every day (and do/have) over some of the things I do, lol.
You’ve literally got employers delusional enough to think they’re owed more than the work employees are contracted to give them, though. Which made more sense in a day and age where companies rewarded you for that kind of loyalty.
I’m an Electromechanic. Being on the road is the most relaxing part of my job.
Felt that.
its terrible to expect them to return. for some, commutes would be outright impossible. game dev is fully possible remotely.
Citation? I work at a gas station and CSRs get 401K after 90 days - non store employees get it within 30 days (becoming fully vested takes three years I think). Most of the places I’ve been looking at have similar schemes. Allowing you to start contributing sooner but not being vested completely until later. At that level 90 days isn’t even that big a deal, put that money into an IRA or something.
I imagine a lot of software developers feel very very differently than you on the topic. A friend of mine is a graphic designer in the Denver area and the commute to work is absolutely her least favorite part of the job. Imagine you’re her boss and you can take someone who loves their job and increase their job satisfaction by nearly 100% with one minor change.
I’ve had a gun pointed at me and at work and I still recognize that the very short drive to and from is absolutely when I am most likely to die.
35 years of experience in the software development industry leads me to believe otherwise.
Even the industries where that used to be etched in stone are being forced to adjust to a different world. If a hiring manager dismisses everyone who only has 2-3 years per employer their applicant pool will shrink to nearly nothing.
