I think Elune is just her name. Like Surlain or Lorien. They don’t mean Night elf (best elf). Perhaps the moon is just the manifestation or focus of Elune power.
Don’t they sometimes call her mother moon? Assuming that’s not a translation they probably differentiate between the hunk of space rock and the goddess.
I’m getting sick and tired of this outdated quote being thrown in.
This line dates from Vanilla/Classic… Since then we’ve been introduced to …
Old Gods…apparantly something even big bad Sargeras is frightened of.
Troll Gods of Northrend… whom apparently troll priests have been snacking upon for power-ups.
Odyn and his fellow Keepers who seem to be the gods of the Vrykul.
The Wild Gods of the Night Elf Pantheon.
and so on?
All of this history since then has thrown the idea of “god” into a blender and all we have are pieces of meaning.
So what does the phrase “one true god” mean? What does god itself mean, and by whose assessement ranks Elune in a singular role? Who confirms her? She’s certainly not acknwledged by the Tauren, nor the Humans, nor any other native Azerothian race, She’s not even acknowledged by the Night Elves as a whole. The Highborne and Azshara certainly had no deference for her and neither do the Nightborne who have even older claims to Night Elf culture than the Kal’dorei.
Yeah but a manifestation of doesn’t necessarily mean they literally believe it is their goddess. That could mean they simply believe it’s a symbol of her power in the world.
Or maybe it’s the other way around. If Elune is a projection of the Moon, that would explain why she is powerless and never has been known to manifest when the Moon is not visible.
I know she’s a goddess. Is Elune just her name, or is it the WORD for “moon” (like “Luna” is in Latin, while still being their word for Moon), and if it’s her name, what would the word for Moon be.
Linguistically, Shalassian is probably the closest thing to Highborne speech. Darnassian and Thalassian are variants with similarities. Elune is some sort of Goddess for sure. She seems to embody both the Light AND the Void. She’s not like anything else we’ve seen.
