Hence why WoW is too fundamentally flawed to ever have good lore. Anything will only ever be enjoyable for only half the player base.
N’Zoth was the first Old God to actually succeed in his plan to get free. Once freed and able to unleash the full might of the Void and what does he do, attacks a couple out of the way zones to corrupt some alien relic. It just seemed anticlimax and convoluted.
You are also comparing his as a threat to those created 11-15 years ago, like the writers haven’t managed to evolve in their story telling. “Here’s the threat, now kill it.”
I have to disagree. The cinematic wasn’t that cool and was just rushed as much of the rush of the expansion. “Oh, the plot device amulet you have been carrying can also act as a conduit to kill the bad guy. Worked perfect and all his stuff disappeared too. The end.”
The Sword stabbing Azeroth was also just tricking the player. “The blood of the planet is leaking out and we are going to fight each other over it.” That’s just a forced plot point that the player has to accept. It’s not really a progression of the story.
That’s true but WoD wasn’t a good story to begin with. It was a corporate expansion to cash in on the Warcraft movie and made very little sense.
I mean, look at Northrend. It’s a continent at the roof of the world that was only presented as an icy wasteland until the expansion hit and look what happened. Sure there is a lot of snow zones, but there is also a melted tundra, a jungle, a pine forest, Troll ruins. The artists have the potential to make something, they just need to be given the chance.
"This…
Yes… I would become Him. I would save everything. This I believed. Yet still they cried out, in rage and despair…
Divided over the fate of the star. A rare occurrence, always fleeting, but not this time. Not this time…
Reconciliation Elidibus. I was needed. I withdrew myself from Zodiark. For them…
My people. My brothers… My friends…
Stay strong. Keep the faith. At duty’s end we will meet again. We will. We will.
The rains have ceased, and we have been graced with another beautiful day. But you are not here to see it."
Absolute tear jerker. That and Emet’s powerful line:
“Remember us. Remember… Remember that we once lived.”
If you actually believe that, then I think you’re a moron and have nothing further to discuss with you, and will completely refrain from responding to you hence forth.
Forge of Origination turned Uldum and Tanaris into the wasteland that it currently is, when it used to be all trees. It’s kind of a big deal. What kind of idiot spreads their forces thin by attacking every non-strategical point on the map?
I can’t even with you. That’s literally every plot point in any MMO ever.
/sigh, and the Earth is flat too, chemtrails, steel beams… etc. I get it.
XD
Jaina does literally anything
WOW WHAT A COMPLETE MARY SUE/INEPT/WEAKLING/ALLIANCE SCUM
dont know why you have faith in this games playerbase to stray from their tribalism.
Literally every main FF character in existence. Cloud and Squall hid it better because they struggled with their inner thoughts a lot. I mean, I don’t mind mary sue characters, I think it’s fun at times. I don’t hold them in this weird negative connotation that everyone else does.
I know the plot of Warcraft probably much better than you do. The issue is that the story is overly complex base it has long exceeded it’s lifetime and original creators. Azeroth has Titan device that can purge the Old Gods for good, but instead of using that, they just lock them up and leave. That’s the lore we have now because they need to keep pumping out expansions. You aren’t going to have a satisfying story when the goal is to just continue it.
There is natural progression and than there seeing the hand that is writing. Good story telling versus bad. Yeah, maybe you can’t even.
Seriously? WoD was a nostalgia expansion to cash in and hype the movie that was coming out that was telling the story of the original Horde and has done nothing but damage the lore of Warcraft with Alternate Universe nonsense.
Obviously, at this point I realize I am wasting my time with you since you are already trying to shrug off the opposition with your blatant self appointed egotism and fallacies.
That’s not the point.
No one cares about Mary Sues in games where we control that character.
In WoW, a Mary Sue on the opposite faction is an affront to their very being. Forced. Unrealistic. Catering to losers that don’t have real strength.
And Mary sues on their side? Well those are expected on the “superior” faction.
Factions and pride literally stifle the way people think. Everything is sportsball.
FF14 Lore is Supreme.
WoD is the cash in expansion tho, even Blizz admitted to that in their interview
What would you say were the biggest challenges to keeping this kind of story feasible and believeable for players that may not be as into the lore or the story or the old Warlords, maybe even didn’t play the original Warcraft games?
Those are the easy ones though right, when you think about it? Because players that aren’t into the lore or the story and they’re just playing the game for any number of reasons, for their own enjoyment, whether we explain or not doesn’t really matter to them. Because the world is the story anyway. And that’s something we constantly improve and make better regardless – so for them, the experience should just be better.
What about the people that do follow the lore?
We absolutely consider that as we go through. For us again it came down again to look, when you get down into Draenor, and you get into the practical experience of playing the expansion, maybe for some of the most staunch of the lore advocates it may still remain – lingering questions may remain, but we felt pretty confidently that people would just be immersed by what’s happening around them. Because the problem with anything, with a time travel hook, is that once you start trying to explain it, it becomes worse. So you start down this kind of slippery slope of, well clearly it’s this, and because of this and because of this – and we didn’t want anything to do with that, because it would have detracted from everything that’s happening.
Darn it we can’t breakthrough to the WoW fanboy.
Caring for WoW lore is like caring for competitive pokemon.
Explains nothing. Keep that tinfoil hat though, I do believe George Washington is riding a UFO to come beam us all away. It’ll protect you.
Shadowbringers ending full of heart, emotion, and a conclusion to an amazing story with fantastic characters that were fully fleshed out through extensive character development and call backs to a story stretching as far back as A Realm Reborn:

BFA Ending: “Haha, laser go brrrrrrr.”
How is it tinfoil hat when Alex and Chris themselves said so?
N’zoth was very competently written and was genuinely interesting (IMO) up until 8.3 absolutely crapped the bed with him.
The plot armor bit is definitely kind of lame, but the ascian at the start of shadowbringers was a very well written character. Him, and the warrior of darkness made for hands down, the best rpg story I’ve ever experienced.
FF14 has incredible writers, and I’m reminded that I need to resub at some point to catch up on the story.
i’ve got 4 free days recently. Story of shadowbringers currently finished btw, might aswell check it now.
Jesus, this thread devolved in a BAD way.
I had to google Elidibus.
WoW and FF14 both have their pros and cons but im glad to see so many people acknowledge (rightfully) that the story in FFXIV blows wow’s out of the water. Anyone who’s bored w the current state of wow and enjoys a fleshed out RPG story should def check out ff14 while waiting for Slands. Or just play both like I do!
To answer OP’s original question; theres no competition. Elidibussy wins
Look at me, I’m so cool hating on Wow while paying for it because.
