That is the reason why the mentor figure usually dies either at the end of act 1, or at the end of act 2 in a story. (Sometimes they die during act 3, such as Qui-Gon). It is a cliche, but it is a cliche for a reason. Can’t have the new blood be the hero if the old wise master can do it for them. The key is to make the mentors death be emotionally relevant to both the hero, and the audience.
