This is such a braindead comment.
Gold can be farmed at your own pace.
Pathfinder is arbitrarily locked behind patches and then further behind carefully planned time locked goals.
Lets be honest for a second here.
It’s very likely that the flying we have in alpha is the final leveled up flying because they want to make the best impression possible in a time when they certainly NEED to make a good impression.
It’s, IMO at least from how timegating worked throughout the Ion expacs, going to start with minimal airtime, diminished speed gain from dives, and no vigor points, which will probably be unlocked slowly throughout the expansion.
I’m not saying D-flying is bad, it’s just that unneccesary timegating is almost certainly going to be a part of it because no reasons at all.
That’s not the purpose of conducting an Alpha, which is to test the game for bugs and balance issues.
Also Blizzard has never released a feature that levels up like this in its fully-leveled state. For example: When Artifacts were out on the Alpha and Beta for Legion they were in the base configuration. Blizzard didn’t put them on the Alpha and Beta in their fully-upgraded states.
Also the interface for the powerups for flight on the Alpha only currently allows 3 powerups when there is room for 6. It’s pretty clear that what is on Alpha is just the base version of Dragonflight.
I wonder if it will be TOO powerful once it is fully leveled up.
- Will it be so strong that players no longer need to interact with the terrain to get anywhere? That would defeat the whole point of Dragon Riding and would be bad.
- Will it be so ludicrously fast once fully leveled up that the game world starts to feel like a tiny sandbox? That wouldn’t be good for the game.
I believe that testing out the more developed system is what an alpha is for, and that testing it out without the things you want to test would be silly.
Having room for 6 does not in fact mean there will be 6, or preclude the possibility of it starting with 0 or 1.
Agree with that, 100%. Empty space is needed in the game. It’s always odd to me that the enemy base and our base is frequently a 30 second stroll from each other.
That may be your belief, but it clearly isn’t Blizzard’s.
There have been many features added to WoW over the years that included systems that leveled up in power such as Artifact weapon, Azerite shoulders, Covenant powers, etc.
Blizzard has NEVER presented these powers in their fully leveled up configuration as part of the Alpha or even the Beta.
True. From the art design it looks clear to me like they are anticipating up to 6 being added. But this is Alpha… Blizzard could always change their mind and go with a reduced number.
Still, it seems beyond unlikely that this is supposed to be a presentation of fully upgraded flight. Blizzard has never done that in any prior Alpha or Beta. And there is ZERO evidence to suggest they have suddenly changed course and are doing that now.
You seem to be going off the assumption “this is fun, so it must be that players aren’t getting this at the start of the expansion. Blizzard will stiff us so we go a year before we get this.”
I think that reflects your poor view of the Blizzard developers than any actual evidence of how Blizzard is doing this Alpha or has done previous Alphas.
Agreed. Like any fantasy game or good work of fiction, what is required is “suspension of disbelief”.
It may not be realistic but it has to feel realistic. Sure the gameworld of Vanilla WoW only encompassed something like 14 square miles. But at the time it FELT like 2 vast continents.
This was accomplished with, by modern standards, short view distance, slow travel speeds and widely varied terrains.
It would not be a good thing for WoW if flight speed is so fast due to super-fast Dragon Riding that you can get anywhere in seconds. It would be convenient yes… but it isn’t good for the game if it causes suspension of disbelief to break down.
If WoW’s continents actually felt like they only encompass 14 square miles, it would feel less like you’re in a real world and more like you’re in a tiny sandbox.
The version we saw in phase 1 of the alpha was already 10x as fun as regular flying. This version is what we get while leveling with only a few talents unlocked. max speed is 950% for dragon riding so with enough vigor, it will far surpass regular flying as the best way to get around.
I don’t understand the luddite attitude around flying. This is something long overdue and I’m glad they are finally adding fun back into the game.

It’s not being a Luddite, it’s realizing that all the work you put in getting mounts was wasted They should offer refunds on every flying mount they sold in the the cash shop.
Flying does not need to be fun. Its for travel.
Hard disagree. I’d prefer flying to be engaging and fun rather than hopping on a mount and just alt tabbing while I fly across entire zones to get to the next quest or boss.
Guild Wars 2 already did this with all of their mounts. They’re all engaging and fun to use, not just speed increases.
Flying for now since it’s Alpha, chances are in release it won’t be the same.

Definitely. I participated in betas a couple of times and they had things that they completely changed before it went live. Alpha is a time when they try things out and are not feature complete. Also, the only people they let in are employees, friends and family, and fanboys. So take anything you hear with a grain of salt.

You can still use those mounts to fly as you did before. Nothing is stopping you from old-school flying.
Those complaining about dragon flying are the same dolts who hamstring their fun in the name of ‘efficiency’.
Only, dragon riding does get you places faster. Literally more than twice as fast in some cases. It is more efficient.
If dragon riding is received positively on live as much as it has been on alpha, then I’m sure they will find a way to incorporate it into older mounts. Something like transmog but for mounts could work. Or a mount equipment item of some kind that enables the new physics. That way they can keep older flying as well as let people use their older mounts with the new physics. Some people still refuse to use automobiles and instead use horse and buggys so I guess the option for older flying should stay open.

Honestly, I doubt that moving that fast will make it to live. They’ve always thrown in stuff to slow people down so that they won’t do the content too quickly and keep playing. You can’t count on anything in an alpha making it to the live release.
The last thing I heard was:
THEY. CAME. FROM … BEHIND!!

We know the dracthry racial version of it is a non uograded form.
And while ive not played it, it does not appear to be any different to those using the mount version of the new flying.
So i would say its most likely to be the base version without any upgrades.
It’s more than a goblin glider.
Would you call an airliner a glider because it has a limited range of operation, a set amount of fuel, and can’t hover in place?
Actually they said there wasn’t going to be flying at all before community backlash made them (possibly begrudgingly) add Pathfinder achievements that kept flying locked until a few weeks into 6.2.
But before all that they were saying that would be unlocked in a future patch.
Ah, thanks for the info. Makes sense they would want to see how it’s received before proceeding further. I’ve been talking to a friend about dragon riding and he hopes they don’t put all this effort into a new form of flight and don’t continue further with it.
Depends on how the community takes it of course. A good portion are already dubious about this and see another attempt at cancelling flying yet again and look at it as a shiny carrot. Some love the idea which is cool, but at the end of the day when they do release regular flying again in a major patch im really really curious to see how many like it enough to choose it over straight flying.
At the end of the day we’ll just have to see how dragonriding lands when DF releases. From my perspective it looks amazing.
are they going to mess around with flying for people that have flying now???
