Dragonflight: Legacies, Chapter 3

Well, I suppose this makes Neltharion a bit more valiant, ignoring perhaps the now tragic reasoning afore.
BEFORE: Corrupted by the Old Gods unwillingly after glimpsing the end of the world or something like that.
AFTER (DF): Chose the Power of the Old Gods to Defeat Razsageth!
And what’s more it does add more to his character, though not really looked upon; He sealed away the Dracthyr afore he truly fell. I did like it, Neltharion looks nice by the way, and this adds some more Dragon-Era Lore that I really needed! Will there be another chapter though? And I wonder if the Primalist Rebellion serve themselves, or some other dark person; I for one hope themselves, leave the Old Gods to their own expansion for once, they deserve a proper chapter closing.
Oh…Right yeah the artifact… that’s my only complaint… I thought Neltharion was charismatic or something but, in the end he just had a glove… A Charisma Glove!

with how bad devos was handled, I don’t think uther actually came out of that too bad, they could’ve done way worse with him at least.

regardless, afterlives:bastion will forever be one of my favorite shorts, uthers VA rocked it.

I finally got the chance to watch this myself.

I think it’s mostly fine from a lore perspective. It’s obvious that Deathwing was corrupted by the Old Gods from the very beginning. The fact that he didn’t trust the Dracthyr at all, using mind-control to enforce his will upon them, shows that the Old Gods had a grip on him even that early. It’s more like after losing the Infinity Gauntlet he opened himself up more to them. This is probably when he got his crazy powers like the Geas he could impose upon others. This doesn’t really change or retcon anything TBH. It is consistent with his portrayal in War of the Ancients where he thinks he alone can save the world and he can’t trust anyone else other than his dark powers.

The only thing I think is dumb is the idea that Deathwing felt he needed Old God powers to defeat some random dragon. Razsageth is not it. You are not fooling anyone Danooz.

But aren’t we spending 6mins of an 8min clip talking about a guy that’s already been defeated?? What’s the point???

To build up to the REAL bad guy?

The whole video for me was:

Neltherian did (this)! (don’t care, we already defeated him)
Neltherian did (that)! (don’t care, already beat him)
Neltherian has many active accounts with Old God OF pages. (I don’t kink-shame, and I already bea… defeated him)

The whole thing was one long “I don’t care” for me. :expressionless:

The biggest thing to come out of it for me was: I miss the REAL cinematics Blizz used to do. These cardboard cutout things were cool as “something different.” But I never wanted them to stop making the cinematic-quality shorts they were LITERALLY famous for.

Big Sadge.

She might not dominate the history books, but I would be careful about underestimating her.

World-building. Sauron was essentially already defeated by the time we follow the characters in Lord of the Rings, reduced to a pitiful eyeball, and yet knowing about his fall enhanced the story.

Deathwing made the Dracthyr, they are ever tied to his character. Knowing why he sealed them away for 20,000 years matters to them.

This isn’t accurate at all. Sauron has ALL of his powers… he just couldn’t take physical form; and thus, the Eye.

You can argue the semantics of that if you want to try. But I know as a mere “Tolkien-nerd” that an army of SUPER TOLKIEN NERDS will refute that point better than I ever could.

Your second paragraph is a better point, anyway.

How about this–

Deathwing MADE the Dracthyr.

As Sylvanas MADE all these Maw-soul-Warriors-or-whatever from her burning The Tree.

Ever since the conclusion of SoD, I’ve been saying the conclusion of 10.0 will amount to a boss-fight we CANNOT win… and Sylvanas and her Maw-Army will swoop in to save the day.

Not sure where I was going with that… lol

He actually had reformed himself before the books took place. He was the Necromancer that Gandalf waltzed off to play with when Bilbo and company got to Mirkwood.

The Necromancer was still after the Fall of Numenor, which is when he lost his physical form.

You wanna talk about “before the books”, I know alllll about it.

Right but he got better. He just wasn’t at full strength without his jewelry and got turned back into a poof of smoke when it fell into lava.

Yes! It was so good. I’ve enjoyed a lot of the past animated shorts. Some other faves include Azshara, Khadgar, Maraad, and Durotan.

After thinking about it a bit more, I think the reason the Dragonflight shorts haven’t resonated with me is because none of them focus in on specific characters in the way that past shorts have. In almost all of the past shorts, we get to see specific moments of a character’s life. For Azshara, it was what happened to her during the Sundering and how she made a pact with N’zoth. For Uther, it was what happened to him after he was killed by Arthas. For Maraad, it was what happened to him when he was trying to defend his people during the orcs’ assault on Shattrath.

The stories cover intimate and pivotal moments in those characters’ lives. In the Dragonflight shorts, we have some of the same elements, but it feels like we’ve taken a step back in perspective. Instead of getting moments where we’re able to get really close to a character, we’re just being told what happened vs. actually being able to truly feel it. For example, in the first short we get to see the Aspects and how they defeated Galakrond. But we don’t get a window into any of their hearts or minds as they do so. Same with Deathwing/Neltharion in the later shorts.

While I appreciate the fact that they’re probably just trying to cover a lot of lore in these newer shorts, I hope that we get at least one that hones in more on a specific character. Emberthal seems like a good candidate for that.

Yay! A broken Infinity Gauntlet and a whiny wuss of a dragon-man! This expansion is not sparking joy.

Bravo Blizzard – these legacy videos have been fun to watch.
