Dragonflight Alpha Thread

English is a stupid language and I refuse to submit to its stupid rules

Anyway looks like renown is back but a little iffy because it seems to be a hybrid of rep grinding and I hate rep grinds :sob:

As a fan of traditional rep grinds, I find this kinda crappy.

Every daily quest gives only 75 rep with the respective faction… gross and bad. increase it

“Get 3k rep to get 200 extra each week,” god how laughably stupid

Flashback to WoD

This is a suicide mission! We cannot return home if we destroy the portal!
Five minutes later
I will open a portal to Azeroth to bring through reinforcements, but the portal is unstable and cannot be open long!
Not two minutes later
Behold our glorious PVP enclave, resplendent with portals directly back to Azeroth!

As far as “crummy Shadowlands systems” goes I guess renown is one of the less offensive, since its just extensible reputations with catchup mechanics, but… idk, if we had to have something like this, I wish it’d be for factions that we care about more?

One of Shadowlands’ big problems was that I didn’t really care about anything that was happening there–it is all gonna go away at the end, and I don’t particularly want to dress up like a blue human valkyrie. I wanna dress up as a cool draenei warrior man.

That’s less of a problem in Dragonflight since at least it takes place in the real world, but I still can’t be a centaur or tuskarr or anything like that so while getting a funny santa hat might amuse a bit these factions lack the punch of the ones our characters can really consider themselves a part of.

So unless you’re gonna give me a playable Centaur through renown why not have an endless reputation system with an organization I can actually have my character be a part of? I wanna get Exodar renown and unlock dozens of ostentatious crystal-based armor sets

This was one of Legion’s strengths–there was no “renown” of course, but there were expansion-spanning relationships with certain factions pertaining to our classes, and most of those felt really good and relevant to our characters (ok metal viking valhalla for warriors sorta sucked, but basically all the other ones were very cool)

This might just be sour grapes about DF not being the soft reboot old world revamp + focus on playable races story I would’ve preferred, but I want some stories about orcs and elves and gnomes and draenei, not expansion-specific non-playable race du jour

Any time you’re tempted to comma splice, use a semi-colon. No one really knows what they’re for, so no one will ever question it.

true fact: in Greek, the semicolon serves as the “question mark”. This is due to the fact that its usage is so mysterious that it conveys the notion of a question much better than “?”

I have been doing my best not to spoil story elements of zones for myself, but I was watching a Bellular video showcasing dragon riding and did notice some familiar groups at some quest sites as he traveled through the Azure Span.

Saw a few Kirin Tor banners in one area and some human and dwarf Explorer’s League folks at another place. Bellular said, even, that Dragonflight has a thematic feeling of “Warcraft” that he hasn’t felt since Legion. Which is a lot of Warcraft, given that BfA wasn’t terrible for evoking a Warcraft feeling.

I hope that helps settle your worries a little.

Used a spaced en dash to make compound sentences in 2022 – punctuation can be an emoji, too :man_shrugging:t4:

Oh I’d love that myself!

I just like what they did with renown and the catch up mechanics behind it. I can understand frustration being gated but I liked the catch up mechanics as a filthy casual so that it wasn’t painful to keep up on if you couldn’t play every day. Would totally love something similar for the existing core factions.

The best rep grind era was in WoTLK? when you could just wear the faction tabards and get rep in dungeons and stuff.

My hottest take is that reputation grinds are possibly the most backwards, asinine and pointlessly damaging part of WoW’s entire strategy.

I’d argue Rep grinds are fine…back in the day. When a Daily would award us 500 points of Reputation and we could farm tokens off respawning Elites that gave out a thousand points at a time.

Not the current crop of 50/75 per turn in.

I liked it when Reputation grinds were a side thing you did instead of being one of the main selling points.

It went from “you CAN do these rep grinds for some gear, a mount or pet, a cool enchant if you’re a raider, and a cool tabard at the end” and now it’s “you better do this or else you’re going to suck you stupid fool eat the dirt grinds eat it eat it eat it”

If you (maybe wisely) chose to sit out Shadowlands, now is your chance to avoid ever paying for it

I guess it might be that way in Dragonflight? As far as we know, it does not have any “end game systems” at this time. So no mandatory grinds to get your best azerite essence or legendary upgrade or whatever.

Return of renown smells rather “systems-y” so idk if they’re gonna slip in something like that eventually, but for now all those renown rewards Juspion linked just look like profession recipes and cosmetics, which is the sort of stuff reps were traditionally used for.

As for whether reps are a good mechanic or not… idk. Even if there were no reps I’d do world quests for gold and gear, but I never go nuts and do all quests available per day just for rep.

The more important thing to me is that world quests go back to being like they were in Legion/BfA, where they were rather quick and had decent rewards, rather than how they are in Shadowlands, where they’re slow, offer rare or no decent gear rewards, and for some reason they discontinued the dang flight whistle. The reps that are attached to those quests are just sort of a bonus.

I was literally coming to post about this. Looks like like I get to go to Super Hell, after all.

…aw buttons. And of course Immortal Empires drops for Total War Warhammer 3 tomorrow.

My one confusion with this is that, does this sale/bonus/whatever mean that Shadowlands won’t be bundled with the base game once Dragonflight launches? Or is it just an early taste to try to get people back before the expac launches?

100% an early taste and “please make our numbers look good and play this game we’re literally giving it to you for free”
