Anyone else remember when this fun and innovative system was going to break our water striders and make them obsolete?
We were going to be able to use this new and immersive feature of Mount Equipment that would give fun and engaging gameplay to all of our mounts, not just the water striders?
End result?
Water striders were broken and the hard work we did to earn them was thrown away. That immersive system was as bad as we said it would be and now 2 years later Blizz is still hoping we have forgotten about it.
Dragon riding is version 2.0. Only have Flight via Dragon riding and wait until 11.0 hoping everyone forgets about regular flying and if anyone asks if they can fly in 11.0? Of course not, we are no longer in the Dragon Isles.
yeah…I remember. I remember doing the strider grind for two WoW accounts and very soon after that they were stripped of their WWing.
Thankfully I have the Anglers Raft, but Ive read they have had that thing in their nerf gun sights in the past too.
I don’t think it is quite that bad, but it’s definitely not ideal already based on what we are hearing so far. If they have plans to unlock regular flying later on then I guess that’s fine, but we really, REALLY need to find out more about this dragon riding system before we can make a fair assessment. But yeah, I have my concerns already.
Just to be clear, I am not knocking on Dragon Flying as bad. It’s just more of what will it take away.
If it was in addition as a fun side game I would never say a bad word even if I didn’t like it. However, the more I see of it the more I feel it’s going to be like Mount Equipment where we are sold a bill of goods of how great something is gonna be in order to cover up what we are actually losing.
This can’t be a replacement for regular flying, a way to delay regular flying even longer or a way to make “interesting” maps (the kind I don’t believe belong in an MMORPG anyway) then it’s gonna be a hard no for me.
My concern with this Dragon Flying is in some of the things they have said about it.
Them saying something to the effect of you not being able to control your destination and landing is giving me vibes of this being more Panzer Dragoon than actual flight.
They definitely looked at ways to tamper with flying.
I feel it’ll definitely be a system that stays around since they tend to keep these sunk cost stuff around for a bit.
They saw that pathfinder was kind of a dud. This route kind of addresses flying out the gate but gives those who like the outdoor immersion stuff to have something to progress on.
It being dragons etc, I think thematically I get why they did what they did, it’s not all sinister reasoning but they really just wanted to also change a lot up in 10.0.
My early issue is what will be knocking you down from the sky. Blizzard tend to make things that feel more annoying… past that I’ve learned to keep an open mind if it means they finally shake it up.
I said earlier, if they wanna stick with pathfinder, make it make sense.
You mean like the Zereth Mortis eagles that follow you forever or the Elites in the sand that dismount you when they throw their shoe at you from a mile away?
The Dragon Isles take place at such a high elevation that while the Dragonflights there have adapted to the thinner air there and can fly, normal mounts cannot initially.
To counter this you will have to complete a long questline to craft a magical saddle, imbued with the magic of the Flights, that when your normal mounts wear it, they can fly again in the thinner atmosphere.
Mounts already have equipment slots, so it’s, programming wise, easy peasy.
See this is where the Original Devs were so good vs the current devs.
Anyone remember EQ and the death XP penalty?
If you go back and listen to the early devs, had a system in place to punish you if you played too much. They found out players didn’t like it. Imagine not liking a punishment, huh? Well they got smart and put it in as an xp buff that you earned for being logged out - we still have it today.
Today’s devs just want to punish you if you don’t fit their way of playing. Want fly? punish. Want water striders, punish. Knock you down, daze you, dismount you.
Yeah that works in regular video games but it’s what separated WoW from other MMORPGs
We’ve worked harder for mounts that do less. The reward was replaced with the ability to get the perk in equipment form for basically free.
As someone who grinded both Striders before the change happened, and spent way more time than that farming for the Sea Turtle back in the day (which had its unique “perk” taken and spread between many, much easier to obtain, mounts). I’ll never understand why people are still angry over how little it matters.
I’m curious how it will work out.
From the sound of it you might take off from point A, headed to point B and run out of momentum half way there and end up landing without wanting to… sounds lame.
I’m also concerned with their affinity for stupid CD’s that they will put a 5 minute CD on the ability to take off. So when you are unable to make it to your destination, like in my first example, you are stuck running on the ground to your destination.
If it’s not capable of making it very far without building momentum, I’ll stick with gliders. At least I know how far they can fly lol
My worry too. My hope is that we’ll get real flying back at some point in 10., maybe near the end, I don’t care as long as we get it. Dragon Riding can then just stick around as a fun mini game, like if they add Dragon Riding races or something. If they’re, like, this is the end of flying, it’ll be this or nothing going forward, well, I’ve had a pretty good run with this game.
