I’ll update this list with suggestions, but the goal is to be objective for those who are indecisive about it.
Pros:
Flight from the very beginning of the expansion. Thank you!!! How much did we have to beg for this?!
Faster than regular flight. WAY faster.
Keeps herbalism / mining prices stable for real players because it’s a big deterrent for bots. This is a MASSIVE pro for me, and for anyone that cares about the economy
You don’t actually need to fly at all to level. You can literally be grounded all the way to max if you prefer it.
Races are a new form of casual content.
EDIT:
Realism! Yes, feels a lot more real than a mount staying in one spot forever like some balloon. Not even balloons stay stationary.
Cons:
It’s like learning a whole new game: hard for some, easy for others
Motion sickness, if you are prone to that. This is super important; I don’t recommend it for people with vertigo or epilepsy
Can be very very slow if you don’t know what you are doing. Much slower than regular flight in that case; practically a glorified Goblin Glider.
You are gimped until you get all the glyphs, so you are encouraged to farm them early (probably even before doing the quests).
It can be utter garbage to make small “calculated” movements, like trying to climb a tiny vertical hill, or when you are gliding just a few feet bellow where you want to land.
Can use my large collection of mounts; and there are some mounts I’m really proud off and use all the time, like Jaina’s elemental.
EDIT:
Can’t just let it fly in the background as I watch a youtube video or something, like we used to with old flying. It’s always interactive, no autopilot.
Neutral:
Fun / Unfun (this is subjective). I personally hated it at the beginning, but now I really like it.
Suggestions? Concerns? Ideas? Opinions?
Do you love it, hate it, or don’t care for it? Help the undecided figure out if they should or shouldn’t play the expansion.
EDIT:
Just tried a challenge for fun, and to know if it was doable.
You just aim up and use skyward ascent and you get tons of air. After that just tilt slightly downward and keep the blue wind around you when possible. Using skyward ascent while flying horizontal gives you very little lift, I think a lot of people probably make that key mistake. The learning curve however is microscopic
Once you get some of the flying “talent” upgrades it’s soooo easy you never run out of vigor and it refills crazy fast. You can fly around and grab those upgrade tokens in no time and there is zero time required to research the upgrades unlike similar upgrade systems from previous expansions.
The motion sickness thing I totally understand. Ultimately if people prefer going a bit slower and just using the traditional flying I see no reason to not have the option.
What is so hard to understand they don’t like it and no matter what you say to try and persuade them it isn’t going to work. I swear these dragon rider’s are acting like a bunch of children trying to get their way.
If you come up and tell me that such and such is boring and you don’t like it I’m not going to keep harassing you about it so accept the fact your precious dragon riding isn’t that big of a hit as you all want to think.
I’m trying to be neutral in the post… chill. No one is trying to convert you. Just giving you info so you can make an informed decision. If that decision is you don’t buy the expansion, great, I am happy to help you save the 60 dollars.
I like it because it’s something new and fun and gimmicky. It feels like something that could be built upon a lot, but I’d prefer if it were a side game, like pet battles. Go around and collect points for your talent tree and glyphs to unlock customization options, but isn’t a central part of your levelling and playing experience. It would be a neat way to kill time if you aren’t into raiding or pvp, or just want something to do on the side if you’re a collector. Add titles and other cosmetic rewards to it for extra oomph.
I find it super frustrating when I get stuck on something like a tree and can’t just fly out of it because I’m out of vigor. Or when I’m flying super fast and overshoot the node I’m going for. Or when I’m trying to scout out where the node is and am swooping all around while trying to look down. Sometimes I just enjoy casually flying around on my mount, checking things out at my own pace. I don’t always enjoy having to micro manage my dragonriding while I want to enjoy the scenery or farm mats.
Fortunately I don’t have any health issues that interfere with me using the ability, I can’t image how it must feel for those with vision issues, or motion sickness, or anything else… there’s no way around using it for some parts of the main storyline. Once you get past those, you can stick to ground mounts, but it still sucks.
Edit
It also gets super annoying when you accidentally clip the side of a tree or building or whatever and lose all of your momentum, or just now I had no vigor and was trying to land on the edge of a cliff, but somehow got stuck and couldn’t do anything because I had no vigor to jump or fly up… so I just helplessly clung to the cliffside and slid all the way down into the water. Where I had to wait to recharge all of my vigor.
There are aspects that are beyond annoying and time consuming, and I wouldn’t care if it were optional and something I was doing to kill time… but I need to get back up to the top where my quest hub is, so I have no choice but to sit and wait.
the one atop the raid? Yes. It’s the highest point of the map and it only takes 10 vigor to get to it. Just need to do it “well” or it takes a lot more.
No, the one that’s literally on top of the highest peek of the mountain. There is no way you got up there with 10 vigor. That is a straight incline, with ledges, i can fly entirely across the dragon isles from it.
Exactly my issues too; but technically, it is a buff to real gatherers (big nerf to bots), so I’ve swallowed my pride and now I like it because I can at least stay competitive as a gatherer. Beats having to craft a million alchemy potions for the same profit.
Yes, I’m talking about that one. It’s by the vault of the Incarnates raid, not next to it, but atop the mounting behind it. I have all the glyphs and everything unlocked from day 2 (because day 1 I couldn’t log in). Yes, it took me 11 vigor to do it and I know I kind of messed up while going up. It’s doable in 10.
